EDINBURG — An 18-year-old Pharr man was charged Wednesday, after he allegedly stole four vehicles and smuggled them into Mexico, authorities say.

Victor Manuel Botello Jr. went before Justice of the Peace Charlie Espinoza, who charged him with four counts of theft. He received a total bond of $275,000.

Three of the stolen vehicles were valued between $20,000 and $100,000, making each theft a third-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The other vehicle was valued between $1,500 and $20,000, which a state jail felony.

Botello is accused of taking two Ford F-150 trucks, one F-250, and a Nissan Sentra from the rural Mission and Edinburg areas. The first vehicle was stolen in late February, police said.

The Sentra was the only vehicle recovered. After stealing the vehicles, Botello would allegedly drive them to Mexico, according to court documents.

Investigators believe Botello could be part of a large auto theft ring, said Hidalgo County Sheriff’s spokesman J.P. Rodriguez.

On Monday, the Sheriff’s Office sent out a news release with photos of Botello, asking for the public to help find him. He was arrested at a residence in Pharr on Tuesday after tips led authorities to him.
