25% of Feds Would Consider Leaving Their Jobs if Trump Becomes President

Would this be a bad thing? Perhaps some of the agencies would become more productive instead of political.

Donald Trump leads the Republican field among federal employees, but many still say they would never work for him.

One in four federal workers would consider leaving their jobs if Trump were elected president, according to a new survey conducted by the Government Business Council, Government Executive Media Group’s research arm. About 14 percent of respondents said they would definitely consider leaving federal service under President Trump, while an additional 11 percent said they might. The findings indicate those leaving government would come from agencies' top ranks, as a majority of respondents were in General Schedule positions GS-13 and higher.

Nearly as many Democrats said they would consider leaving in a Trump administration as would definitely stay, the survey found. Among Democrats, 42 percent said they would consider leaving, while 48 percent would not. Just 8 percent of Republican feds would consider refusing to work in a Trump presidency.

Overall, 8 percent of respondents said they “don’t know” if they would consider leaving their jobs if Trump prevails in November.

While a Trump victory may cause a mass exodus of Democrats working in federal government, they are quite happy with their current boss. A majority (56 percent) said they would support him over their current field if he were eligible to serve a third term. Just 37 percent said that given the chance, they would not vote for Obama again.

While one-quarter of the federal workforce might quit their jobs or retire if Trump were to lead the executive branch, a majority -- about six in 10 -- would be “embarrassed” to have him as their boss. About half of respondents said the same of Hillary Clinton, compared to 45 percent for Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and 37 percent for Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Just one in five said the same of Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

Respondents in equal measure – 27 percent – said they would be “proud” of serving under a President Sanders or Clinton, edging out the top Republicans.

The poll was sent to a random sample of Government Executive print and online subscribers from Jan. 20-26; 688 federal employees, representing over 30 civilian and defense agencies, completed the survey. Of those, 35 percent identify as Independents, 28 percent as Democrats, and 26 percent as Republicans. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percent.

Quit before they are fired? I hope they pay their back taxes before they leave.

My B.S. alert monitor just went off. With so many folks struggling to make ends meet in this economy, it's just ludicrous to take such a poll seriously. People with a mortgage and kids to educate and feed just aren't going to give up their good paying federal job over who is or isn't our president. Saying is one thing, doing is a whole other ball of wax.

The question was quit or retire, and you'd be surprised how many have enough years in to retire. But "quit", we can only hope it's true. They might also know that Trump is going to be crawling all over their budgets and actions, and it could be they're going to duck the buck by quitting rather than being fired. If they're fired, they lose a lot. If they quit, they keep everything they've accumulated, and if they retire, they keep even more. So it could be that reality check showing up in the poll as well, i. e. "get out while the getting is still good".

Survey: 1 in 4 Federal Employees Say They Will Consider Quitting If Trump Elected

    by CAROLINE MAY

One in four federal employees say they would consider leaving their jobs if GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is elected president, according to a new survey.

The trade publication Government Executive reports that a survey of federal employees found that 14 percent said they would consider leaving the federal service if Trump were elected. Another 11 percent said “maybe.”

Democrats and Democrat-leaners were more likely to say they would bail on their job if Trump were elected — 26 percent of whom said they would definitely leave compared to 4 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaners. Another 16 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaners said they would “maybe” leave compared to 4 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaners.

Just 48 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaners said they would definitely remain in government if Trump were elected. Eighty-nine percent of Republicans and Republican-leaners said they would stay if Trump were elected.

Trump was the favorite candidate for Republican federal employees polled, leading the rest of the GOP field 32 percent to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’s 17 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)’s 12 percent, Ben Carson’s 9 percent, Chris Christie’s 7 percent, and Jeb Bush’s 6 percent. The rest of the field — John Kasich, Carly Fiorina, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and Jim Gilmore — did not top 4 percent of federal employees’ support.

On the Democratic side, federal employees favor Hillary Clinton 51 percent to Bernie Sander’s 35 percent and Martin O’Malley’s 1 percent.

Federal employees said both Clinton and Trump would be the most embarrassing candidates to have as a boss, 49 percent and 59 percent respectively.

The poll was conducted by Government Executive Media Group’s Government Business Council from January 20-26 among 688 federal employees. It has a margin of error is +/-4 percentage points.

Right in line with all the polls everywhere else!

Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Republicans and Republican-leaners said they would stay if Trump were elected.
Thank you Republican and Republican-leaning federal workers!! Keep up the good work!

Will Canada Be Awash With Americans If Trump Becomes President?

Posted: 12/18/2015 1:43 pm EST Updated: 12/19/2015 12:59 pm EST

    It happens every four years.

The United States holds a presidential election -- and many of its citizens claim they will move to Canada if one of the contenders is elected.

This year, with the advent of people like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz on the right (and Democrats Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton on the left), these mutterings have become increasingly louder.

There is no question that this U.S. election cycle has been a strange one.

As one who travels frequently across the border, both for business and personal reasons, one can get the impression that entire Blue (Democratic) states will be depopulated the moment President Trump puts his hand on the inaugural bible. And a President Sanders, if you believe the cocktail-fueled rhetoric at certain conservative functions, would have a similar effect on Red (Republican) states.

There is no question that this U.S. election cycle has been a strange one. Obviously, there is Donald Trump, the shock-jock of candidates. But you've also got a quasi-Canadian in the race (Senator Ted Cruz, a new kind of birther, one who denies his OWN birth country) and Dr. Ben Carson, who apparently wants to station U.S. troops on the Canadian border.

Question for Dr. Carson: Are those troops to keep people out of the U.S. -- or to stem the tide of those seeking to flee, should you be elected?

The good news, for those Canadians worried about a tidal wave of Americans disturbing our domestic tranquility, is that history shows that all of this bluster translates into very little actual movement.

Sure, there have been large migrations in the past. During and just after the American revolution between 46,000 and 50,000 British Loyalists ("Tories" to Americans) moved to what is today Canada. From the late 1780's until 1812, a further 30,000 moved to Canada, lured by promises of land.

And of course the Vietnam period produced a significant influx -- 30,000 to 40,000 draft-age eligible American males and some multiple of that in terms of supporters and dependents came to Canada (the exact numbers are hard to quantify as a fair number slipped in outside formal immigration channels).

But putting those periods aside, a look at official immigration statistics shows there is little evidence of any post-election spikes, whether the winner was named Obama, Bush, Reagan or Clinton. (Johnson and Nixon are exceptions, presumably due to the Vietnam effect).

Will this time be different? Probably not.

In recent years the number of Americans coming into Canada has pretty consistently hovered around 10,000 (the number was 10,624 in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available.) There are currently 250,535 individuals born in the United States in Canada -- about 0.8 per cent of the total population.

Will this time be different? Probably not. First, consider some practical considerations. Start with those conservatives who say they will flee if Bernie or Hillary win.

    Really?

These are the same people who refer to one of the New England states as "The Soviet Socialist Republic of Vermont." They love guns, God and Rush Limbaugh.

Somehow I think that, on sober reflection, they might have second thoughts about entering Justin Trudeau's land of "Sunny Ways."

Then there is the matter of actually getting in. As of last year, only 38 per cent of Americans have valid passports (the number is 60 per cent for Canadians). And even if you have a passport, you can't just waltz across the border -- there is a rigorous process to follow. Plus there are the tax issues. You never really escape Uncle Sam. And there is also no home mortgage deduction in Canada, which could seriously shrink the size of a conservative's McMansion.

As for liberals, there is the boredom issue. With national health care, legalized marijuana and military spending at a level just north of Lichtenstein, what will they have to complain about? Canadians pride themselves on being pleasantly bland, but for activist Americans, arriving unaccustomed and unprepared, this sudden cultural shift could prove fatal.

And I haven't even mentioned weather. Or the tantalizing prospect of Cuba.

So, no, there will not likely be a tsunami of Americans streaming across our borders after U.S. election day, Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Even if The Donald wins.

Robert Waite moved to Canada from Washington, D.C. in 1986. He was already sufficiently boring and thus survived the cultural adjustment.
