Wisconsin high school girls soccer team traumatized by racist chants during game: ‘Donald Trump, build that wall’

At the exhibition match on Thursday, fans from Elkhorn's crowd were yelling, "Donald Trump, build that wall" at Beloit Memorial High School's Latina and black soccer players.

Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric is now spreading to high school games.

A Wisconsin high school girls soccer match turned traumatizing after fans in the rafters were shouting racial slurs at the players from the Beloit Memorial High School — and included chants like, “Donald Trump, build that wall,” witnesses said.

Elkhorn High School had just defeated Beloit Memorial’s girls 5-0, and their fans decided to make the moment worse on Thursday.

Elkhorn Area High School was 85% white, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction 2013-2014 report.

The girls soccer team, a majority of which are black and Latina, were deeply disturbed by the disgusting jeers.

“They came off the field and weren’t able to finish the game because they were too upset and distraught over what happened to them,” Brian Denu, the girls soccer coach told Channel 3000. “One of the girls was cradled in the arms of one of our assistant coaches for a good 15 to 20 minutes.”

The Elkhorn section’s chants were directed at the girls soccer team’s diverse players.

The two schools, which match-up once a year in an exhibition game because they are in different conferences, have played each other before, but this is the first time there had been a racist outburst from Elkhorn's fans.

"They've never experienced anything like this. They're upset, offended, as you might imagine," Chuck Seils, the Beloit Memorial school district's athletic director told the Daily News. "We're going to support them any way we can."

Seils said he didn't know why the students at Elkhorn hurled racist insults at their diverse players, but he hoped the school's officials dealt with them appropriately.

Beloit Memorial girls soccer coach Brian Denu said he could not believe that these racist outbursts were still happening in 2016.

Administrators at Elkhorn High School, which is 85% white, said they were investigating the incident and addressing the issue with the students responsible.

“Any unsportsmanlike chants, or remarks are unacceptable and not representative of our expectations of our students,” Jason Tadlock, the Elkhorn Area School District administrator told an upset parent in an email.

“We sincerely regret and apologize for any comments/shouts that were made at last night’s games that are not in line with our values.”

But for the traumatized players, the racist attacks were a lot more than just “unsportsmanlike” conduct.

The two teams have faced off in the past, but this is the first time there had been any racist animosity.


“I could just see the hurt and pain on their face and know that this was obviously something that they hadn’t seen before,” Denu told reporters. “You know, it was from a small pocket of the Elkhorn fans, but those words are things that you can’t take back.”

He said he was shocked that this kind of public racist outburst was still prevalent in 2016.

But this isn’t the first time that Trump’s name has been dropped in an ugly showcase of racial slurs.

In February, students at an Indiana high school basketball game had a cutout of the billionaire’s face and were chanting, “Build a wall! Build a wall!” as their team played against Bishop Noll Institute — which has many Latino students.

Just four days before that, on Feb. 22, “Trump” chants roared through a basketball game from the predominantly-white Dallas Center-Grimes High School against the diverse Perry High School.

“People who have racist viewpoints have been able to successfully use ‘Trump’ as a code-phrase for derogatory, racist statements,” said Joe Enriquez Henry, the National Vice President of the Midwest Region for the League of United Latin Citizens.
