Exclusive: Donald Trump Says It 'Could Be' That Some Undocumented Immigrants Stay

In an interview with ABC News' David Muir, Donald Trump refused to say if undocumented immigrants who don’t necessarily want to become citizens would have to leave the country, admitting the possibility that they could stay.

When asked if some of the 11 million undocumented immigrants could stay, Trump replied, "It could be but what’s going to happen is if you’re going to be a citizen, you’re going to leave and you're going to have to come back."

Muir followed up, asking about undocumented immigrants who did not want to become citizens of the U.S.

"They have to make a determination what happens when the border is secure," Trump said.

"So you’re open to them staying here undocumented?" Muir asked.
"I’m going to make a decision, or somebody will. Whether it’s me or somebody else because by that time we’ll have a secure border, we’ll have a wall," Trump said.

But, despite a hardline immigration speech last week, Trump told Muir that he still grapples with the thought of deporting families whose children are U.S. citizens. "It’s a very difficult thing to do," Trump said.

During his speech in Phoenix last Wednesday, he was emphatic in declaring that all undocumented immigrants would have to leave.

"There will be no amnesty. Our message to the world will be this: You cannot obtain legal status or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country,” he said then. "Under my administration anyone who illegally crosses the border will be detained until they are removed out of our country and back to the country from which they came."

Trump also made conflicting statements earlier on Monday during a press gaggle aboard his plane, on the issue of undocumented immigrants achieving legal status.

Initially, when asked what he would do with undocumented immigrants in the country, Trump said, “I’m not ruling anything out.”

A reporter asked if that includes a path to legal status.

"No. To become a citizen you’re going to have to go out and come back. Through the process you’re going to have to get on line. This isn’t touch back,” Trump replied.

However, when asked again about a path to legal status, Trump responded, "We’re going to make that decision into the future.”

But during that speech in Phoenix, Trump adopted a tougher tone.

"For those here illegally today who are seeking legal status, they will have one route and one route only: to return home and reply for reentry like everybody else under the rules of the new legal immigration system,” Trump said.

Immigration, though considered Trump's hallmark issue after he rose to fame proclaiming that he would build a wall on the border with Mexico, is one of the issues on which Trump perhaps has fluctuated the most. Prior to his immigration speech, he indicated in an interview that there would be a "softening" of his immigration plan, surveying a Fox News town hall audience on which stance he should take.

I have no problem with that. There's a lot to do. He's going to get the visa-overstays out which are 45% of all illegal aliens, he's going to get all the criminals out. If there are 11 million, 5 million are visa-overstays and Trump thinks there are millions of criminals, at least 2 million with citations that law enforcement knows about plus all their aiders, abetters, gang-bangers and families, so that's 3 or 4 million right there. Plus all those on welfare, the "public charges", that's the majority of the rest of them, and that's all going to take a couple of years or so while the wall is being built and some additional laws are passed to end birth-right citizenship, strengthen E-Verify, end Sanctuary Cities, increase border patrol, increase ICE agents by 3 times, so much to do, including enforcing the law which means when people are found in the work place by enforcing E-Verify and existing immigration hiring laws, they're all out of here because they're stealing jobs and depressing wages of Americans.

Under existing law and please correct me if I'm wrong, parents of US citizens can apply for permits to remain, so can he even deport these people quickly presently under existing law? I'm not sure about that. There's this "chain migration" problem from the Anchor Baby problem that I think this falls under so just get him to the White House to he can start doing the job we want done.

With the word out that you can be illegal and work and have U.S. born children to cement your stay, illegal aliens are going to be rushing here in even greater numbers. Many illegal aliens would prefer to work and get benefits through their children without legalization or citizenship. They will work off the books and continue their fraud and theft. If they are allowed to stay a Democrat President will eventually give them citizenship. Republican politicians don't appear to care.

The U.S born children will be Democratic voters and can sponsor their family members who would vote Democrat. Deport the parents and their children should go with them. The children, citizens and non citizens, are the magnets to the theft of billions of tax dollars every year.

If these demographic changes through illegal immigration and refugee influx at such high numbers continues, we can say goodbye to America. What if there are 30-50 million of them.

So they have two U.S. born children and three who are illegal. Americans get the short end of the deal and the cycle does not end. The resentment and demands of these people will continue and they will have power and large numbers who are noisy and demanding and who hold sway with politicians and others above the citizenry.

You have no problem with an illegal immigrant amnesty? Wow, you've certainly changed your tone. Well, I certainly have a problem with it. Besides that, all this flip-flopping, hemming, and hawing is making me extremely nervous.

No reason. It's no different than what he said in his speech, it's just another interview by a media trying to make him look like a Hitler and he's trying to put it off into the future for those few that are parents of US citizens, after all the criminals, visa-overstays, public charges on welfare, and ones stealing jobs from Americans are gone. This will all take time, at least a couple of years with all he wants to do.

He continued: "They're going to pay for the wall. We're going to build a wall. They're going to pay for the wall. We're going to keep drugs out. ... We have all of these people flooding into our country. All of those people are going to get out. We're gonna get'em out."

LOL!! "We're gonna get 'em out."

They're all going out. Just get Trump to the White House in November, and he will stop illegal immigration, he will build a wall and secure the borders, he will deport illegal aliens and we'll be free of this problem once and for all. Anyone who thinks Trump is going to quit on this signature issue just isn't thinking clearly.

It's funny watching the STUPID, SICK, MENTALLY ILL CORRUPT MEDIA hound him day in and day out on this issue, and he's playing them for all their worth.
