Day Labor Organization Applauds Napolitano’s Departure

The organization says that the Department’s Secure Communities deportation program, a strategy to target felons in the country illegally for deportation, bears a strong resemblance to Arizona’s hard line policies.

Janet NapolitanoThe National Day Laborer Organizing Network announced Friday that they are “pleased” to see Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano leave the Obama administration.

“While Napolitano largely avoided political blame for her disastrous policies by seeking a contrast between her and the very extremists like Joe Arpaio who she empowered, she ultimately will be remembered as the Secretary who brought Arizona’s repugnant policies to the rest of the country,” Chris Newman, the organization’s Legal Director, said in a statement.

Newman said that the Department’s Secure Communities deportation program, a strategy to target felons in the country illegally for deportation, bears a strong resemblance to Arizona’s hard line policies. The Secure Communities program has come under fire for establishing a deportation quota and ensnaring those who either committed lesser offenses or no crimes at all.

“Napolitano’s departure provides the President an opportunity to reverse course on policies of Arizonification,” Newman said. “He can take the one bright spot of Napolitano’s tenure, deferred action for dream-eligible youth, and expand it to all undocumented immigrants living and working in the United States.”

Napolitano announced Sunday that she will be leaving the administration to serve as President of the University of California. She is the third Director of Homeland Security and has served throughout the entirety of the Obama administration.
