"Dear John, It's Over!" - Tea Party Group Launches "Replace Boehner" Petition

Having folded (twice) once again, a growing number of Republicans are increasingly disavowed with Speaker Boehner. As WaPo reports, the Senate Conservatives Fund (a Tea Party group) is calling for the Speaker's job, noting "unless we install a new leader who will actually go on offense, Democrats will never fear us and we will never have any leverage." The group is launching a petition that seeks to encourage at least 15 House Republicans to refuse to support Boehner for speaker...

Partial text of the e-mail (via Washington Post):

Republicans are giving up because they know that winning is impossible when their leaders are determined to lose. These leaders have telegraphed weakness to the Democrats and sabotaged conservative efforts so many times that Republicans now have no leverage. There's only one solution.

John Boehner must be replaced as Speaker of the House.

Conservatives helped Republicans win a majority in the House of Representatives, which made it possible for John Boehner to become Speaker. Unfortunately, he has chosen to ignore us and help President Obama enact his liberal agenda.

Boehner Keeps On Folding: Now Proposes Clean Debt Ceiling Bill

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 02/11/2014 09:57 -0500

A week ago, we reported that unlike on previous occasions, this time Boehner decided to fold like a lawn chair early in this year's debt ceiling hike debate, and sure enough moments ago Politico confirmed as much when it reported that "House Republicans are abandoning their plan to lift the debt limit and restore military pension cuts due to flagging support from the rank and file. The announcement was made Tuesday morning in a private GOP meeting." As we also predicted, Politico adds that "now, the GOP will have to pass a so-called clean lift of the debt ceiling — one without policy strings attached. But even that won’t be easy. Senior Republican lawmakers and aides are openly wondering just how many of their members will vote for a clean debt ceiling — Democrats will have to bear the brunt of passing the bill, GOP insiders say." And the punchline for the vote, which is set for Wednesday, "Senior GOP sources wonder if they’ll be able to get 18 Republicans to vote for a debt ceiling increase — the bare minimum for passage if every Democrat votes yes."
To summarize: the GOP may have trouble being more Democrat than the Democrats.
In other news, perhaps it is about time for the GOP to eliminate any pretense of "fiscal conservatism" and finally do away with the debt ceiling farce entirely so they can at least show their voters what their true colors really are.

    Throw Boehner out!

By United Press International February 12, 2014 6:50 am

The Senate Conservatives Fund urged the ouster of U.S. House Speaker John Boehner after he scheduled a vote Tuesday on a "clean" debt-ceiling bill.
The House was expected to vote on the bill Tuesday evening.
The fund accused Boehner, R-Ohio, of "helping President Obama enact his liberal agenda," The Hill reported. The group is hoping to recruit enough Republicans in the House to deny Boehner the speaker's post in January 2015.
"Instead of using the House majority to stop bad legislation, Speaker Boehner has used it to increase spending, raise the debt limit, increase taxes, pass a bloated farm bill, and fund the implementation of Obamacare. Instead of fighting for conservative principles, Speaker Boehner has repeatedly surrendered to the Democrats," the fund said in a statement.
House leadership decided during a morning meeting to discard a bill that would have restored a cost-of-living raise for the military after the White House said raising the debt ceiling was not negotiable.
Boehner said Republican members would vote for a "clean" bill, but that Democratic support would have to assure its passage, the Washington Post reported.
Boehner's decision to bring only the "clean" bill up for a vote was met with "stunned silence" by others at the meeting, the New York Times reported.
The bill will be voted on Tuesday night, as the House is scheduled to recess for two weeks on Wednesday, The Hill reported.
A separate vote will be held on the change to military retirement benefits, House leaders said.
Boehner had presented a plan Monday night that would have tied an increase to the debt ceiling to a reversal of cuts in military retirement benefits. The bill got no support from conservative Republicans and Republican leadership said support from Democratic members was unlikely.
Boehner's change of mind shocked GOP members because it violated the speaker's own "Boehner Rule" that increases in the debt ceiling had to be matched by equivalent cuts in the budget.
The president supported bipartisan efforts to reverse the military cuts, Gene B. Sperling, director of the White House National Economic Council, told reporters at a breakfast meeting.
However, he added, "I hope the tactic of threatening default for budget debates is over, off the table and never to happen again."
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has said Congress must increase the treasury's borrowing authority or risk a U.S. default, beginning Feb. 27, on more than $17 trillion in federal debt.

Boehner caves: House passes debt ceiling bill

By Associated Press February 12, 2014 6:55 am

    (File Photo)

WASHINGTON - Unwilling to spook the markets and divided among themselves, House Republicans backed away from a battle over the government's debt limit Tuesday and permitted President Barack Obama's Democratic allies to drive quick passage of a measure extending Treasury's borrowing authority without any concessions from the White House. The 221-201 vote came hours after Speaker John Boehner announced that his fractured party would relent.
Just 28 Republicans voted for the measure, including Boehner and his top lieutenants. But 193 Democrats more than compensated for the low support among Republicans.
Senate Democrats hoped to vote on the legislation as early as Wednesday and send it to Obama for his signature.
The move was denounced by many conservative groups but came after most Republicans in the House made clear they had no taste for another high-stakes fight with Obama over the nation's debt ceiling, which must be raised so the government can borrow money to pay all of its bills.
The bill would permit the Treasury Department to borrow normally for another 13 months, putting off the chance of a debt crisis well past the November elections and providing time for a newly elected Congress to decide how to handle the issue.
Just Monday, Republicans suggested pairing the debt measure with legislation to roll back a recent cut in the inflation adjustment of pension benefits for working age military retirees. Democrats insisted on a debt measure completely clean of unrelated legislation.
"The full faith and credit (of the United States) should be unquestioned and it is not negotiable," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The vote comes four months after Washington defused a government shutdown and debt crisis that burned Republicans politically - an experience they did not want to repeat.
Tuesday's developments, which many Capitol Hill insiders saw coming, mark a reversal of the GOP's strategy of trying to use the debt limit to force spending cuts or other concessions on Obama. The president yielded to such demands in 2011 - before his re-election - but has since boxed in Republicans by refusing to negotiate.
"I am disappointed that Democrats have walked away from the table," said Dave Camp, R-Mich., the glum chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. "But for as disappointed as I am, I cannot in good conscience let the Democrats' refusal to engage, lead to a default."
Boehner, R-Ohio, made the announcement after conservatives failed to rally around his latest plan, floated Monday, to tie lifting the debt ceiling to a measure to reverse cuts to military pensions that were enacted less than two months ago. Earlier plans to tie a debt cap increase to approval of the Keystone XL pipeline or repeal of part of the new health care law failed as well, stymied by a group of hard line conservatives who vowed never to vote for increasing the government's debt, which stands at more than $17 trillion.
The measure does not raise the debt limit by a set amount but would suspend it through March 15, 2015, to allow Treasury to borrow the money it needs to pay bills like Social Security benefits, payments on government debt and checks for federal workers.
The move reflects a return to the old ways of handling the politically tricky debt ceiling vote in which the president's party is expected to carry most of the load to pass it.
"We'll let the Democrats put the votes up," the speaker said. "We'll put a minimum number of (GOP) votes up to get it passed."
"That's how it's supposed to work," said Vice President Joe Biden at the Capitol after swearing in the newest senator, John Walsh, D-Mont.
Only two Democrats, Scott Matheson of Utah and John Barrow of Georgia, broke with their party to vote against the bill. Republican ayes featured Northeastern moderates, Boehner loyalists and members who have announced they are retiring at the end of the year.
Boehner said his inability to assemble 218 GOP votes - enough to win a floor vote - for any debt limit plan left him no alternative but to turn to Democrats.
"When you don't have 218 votes, you have nothing," Boehner said. "We've seen that before and we see it again."
The White House applauded the move. Gene Sperling, director of the White House's National Economic Council, said the administration hopes Tuesday's development means "that the tactic of threatening default or threatening the full faith and credit of the United States for budget debates is over, off the table and never is going to happen again. And if so that would, I think, be a boost for confidence and investment in the U.S."
Obama's refusal to negotiate, GOP disunity, and Boehner's determination to avoid the possibility of a market-cratering default on U.S. obligations gave the Ohio Republican little choice but to announce the vote on a "clean" debt ceiling increase.
"It's disappointing but we have an intractable White House," said Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif. "This is a hard deal for us but it's also important that we keep the country operating and the financial markets stable, so this is the thing we have to take until somehow there's a change in attitude in the Senate or the White House or a change of occupancy of the Senate or the White House."
The announcement amounted to resigned defeat for a party that has sought to use must-pass debt ceiling measures as leverage to force spending cuts on Democrats. Republicans won more than $2 trillion in spending cuts in a 2011 showdown but gave Obama two debt limit increases last year with only modest add-ons.
"The Democrats got burned when we negotiated and that led to the sequester, and we learned our lesson," said Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., referring to across-the-board spending cuts. "And the Republicans got burned when they shut the government down."
The House voted 326-90 Tuesday on separate legislation to restore full cost-of-living increases that were to have been cut by 1 percent for retirees under 62. The cuts, which had just passed in December, were backed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. Repealing them would cost $7 billion over the coming decade, the Congressional Budget Office said Monday.
The reduction caused an uproar among advocates for veterans, and lawmakers in both parties are scrambling to repeal it.

    Conservatives call for Boehner’s head

    Posted on February 12, 2014

It is past time for a new Speaker of the House. One not afraid to stand up to Obama.
    Check it out:
The House voted Tuesday to raise the debt ceiling with no conditions attached, and conservative groups are calling for Speaker John Boehner’s head.
The vote was 221-201, with just 28 Republicans joining 193 Democrats to vote for it. Speaker Boehner cast a rare vote in favor of the bill.
But the attacks began before the vote even took place, as soon as it was known that Boehner would bring a no-strings-attached debt ceiling hike to the floor.
“A clean debt ceiling is a complete capitulation on the Speaker’s part and demonstrates that he has lost the ability to lead the House of Representatives, let alone his own party. Speaker Boehner has failed in his duty to represent the people and as a result, it is time for him to go… Fire the Speaker,” said Tea Party Patriots co-founder Jenny Beth Martin in a statement before the vote. The statement linked to a petition to “Fire the Speaker,” and the group’s Twitter account has been tweeting since the vote asking people to call Boehner and tell him to “resign.”

Boehner Abandons GOP, Passes Debt Limit Bill With Nearly All Democrats

House Speaker John Boehner ended three years of debt showdowns Tuesday by passing a no-strings-attached debt ceiling hike in the U.S. House with nearly all Democratic votes, joined by just 28 Republicans, reports the New York Times. The move followed weeks of internal GOP caucus negotiations in which Boehner failed to find a proposal which would garner enough GOP support to pass without Democratic help. Boehner broke news of his plan to fellow Republicans at a closed-door meeting Monday morning, telling colleagues, “Listen – we’re going to move forward,” and that the time for negotiations within the caucus had ended, according to the Washington Post.

Senate Conservatives Fund: Boehner must be replaced!

    By The Right Scoop

The Senate Conservatives fund is targeting Boehner’s speakership, trying to get at least 15 people to vote against Boehner next time around which would keep him from getting the speakership again:

    THE HILL
    – The Senate Conservatives Fund is calling on House Republicans to force out House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), taking aim at Boehner’s support of a clean debt ceiling hike.

“John Boehner must be replaced as Speaker of the House,” the group says in an email to supporters.

The group is rallying supporters to the website replacethespeaker.com, looking to pressure House Republicans to vote against Boehner next January. Its goal is to get 15 House Republicans to support the cause, which if there’s no change in the balance of the House would leave Boehner short of the 218 votes he needs for another term as Speaker.

“Conservatives helped John Boehner become Speaker, but he has ignored us and helped President Obama enact his liberal agenda,” the website says. “Instead of using the House majority to stop bad legislation, Speaker Boehner has used it to increase spending, raise the debt limit, increase taxes, pass a bloated farm bill, and fund the implementation of Obamacare. Instead of fighting for conservative principles, Speaker Boehner has repeatedly surrendered to the Democrats.”

(CNSNews.com) - The debt of the U.S. government has increased by $2.678 trillion in the 2.5 years since House Speaker John Boehner (R.-Ohio) completed his first deal to put legislation increasing the debt limit through a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
On Aug. 2, 2011, President Barack Obama signed legislation, approved by the Boehner-led House, permitting the Treasury to increase the debt by $900 billion. Since then, the debt limit has been repeatedly suspended by legislation that needed to pass through the Republican-controlled House.
Yesterday, the House once again passed legislation to suspend the debt limit—this time through March 15, 2015, which is after November’s mid-term congressional elections.
This time, the House voted 221 to 201 (with 10 members not voting) to suspend the debt limit. The majority consisted of House Democrats plus 28 House Republicans--including Speaker John Boehner (R.-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R.-Va.).
House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.) voted against suspending the debt limit.
A bill cannot come to the House floor for a vote unless the majority leadership allows it.
On Aug. 2, 2011, when the first debt increase allowed by the Boehner-led House was enacted, the total debt of the federal government was $14,580,704,743,080.97, according to the U.S. Treasury. As of Feb. 10, 2014, the total debt was $17,258,793,918,103.22.
That is an increase of $2,678,089,175,022.25 in the national debt in the two years and six months—or 2.5 years—that the nation has lived under debt limits moved through a Republican-controlled House of Representatives led by Speaker Boehner.
So far, under Speaker Boehner’s debt-limit deals, the national debt has been increasing at a rate of $1,071,235,670,008.90 per year.
That works out to an average of approximately $9,315 in new federal debt per year for each of the approximately 115,006,000 households the Census Bureau estimates there are in the country.
