Menendez Grills Tillerson on Mexico: Communists Build Walls Like in Berlin

Wednesday during the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s hearing for President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State nominee, former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) criticized Trump’s proposed border wall by saying, “The last time a country tried to wall itself completely from a neighbor was in Berlin in 1961. And that wall was constructed by communist East Germany.”


Partial transcript as follows:

MENENDEZ: Let me turn to Mexico, a little different part of the world than we have been discussing. Some of us care about the Western Hemisphere. Last week the president-elect stated any money spent on the wall will be paid by Mexico. Mr. Tillerson, build a wall on the southern border and having Mexico pay for it has been a hallmark chant at Trump rallies. Now the president-elect says the American people will pay for it and have Mexican reimburse us. I also want to point out the last time a country tried to wall itself completely from a neighbor was in Berlin in 1961. And that wall was constructed by communist East Germany. The former Mexican president last week tweeted that — somehow we are conducting foreign policy by tweets these days — that ‘Trump may ask whoever he wants but still neither myself nor Mexico are going to pay for his racist monument. Another promise he can’t keep.’ Close quotes. As you’re well aware, the president-elect has repeatedly referred to Mexican citizens who have come to the United States as saying they’re sending, quote, ‘people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with them. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists and some, some I assume are good people.’ So Mr. Tillerson, do you think Mexicans are criminals drug dealers and rapists?


TILLERSON: I would never characterize an entire population of people with any single term at all.


MENENDEZ: Do you think that those comments help our relationship with Mexico, our third largest trading partner, a trading partner that represents $583 billion in trades of goods and services, including our second largest goods export market?


TILLERSON: Mexico is a long-standing neighbor and friend of this country.


MENENDEZ: And so that doesn’t help your job as secretary of state, does it, if you are to achieve nomination?


TILLERSON: Well, we’re going to engage with Mexico because of their importance to us in this hemisphere and we have many common issues of concern.

Questions about Mexico, Wall, comments from President Trump, Cuba, start around 3:00

Interesting isn't it that both Bob Menendez and Marco Rubio were more concerned with the people in other countries than they were with our own citizens. Rex Tillerson is the perfect nominee for Secretary of State to deal with and solve the problems of our time. For Rubio to play games with this on behalf of foreign nations is a disgrace. Same with Menendez but one expected better from a Republican.

Menendez suffers a common misconception about the Wall built by the communists in Germany. A couple of things we should always remember about this bit of history:

First, the only wall constructed by the communists in Germany that was any source of contention was the wall dividing East and West Berlin between the Russian occupied German communist Berlin and the presence of the rest of the allies in Western Berlin.

Next, the entire city of Berlin was inside East Germany, the communist partition of Germany when Germany itself was divided into East and West Germany.

It was the Russians who arrived first in Berlin and took the city at enormous expense to the Russians. They got there first.

The Wall that was such a significant feature of the history of East and West Germany was never more than a wall dividing two parts of the city of Berlin and the city itself was inside East Germany, communist territory. It really has nothing to do with the issue of controlling illegal immigration between two countries

Americans need to remember and think about the Russians who lost 20 million people during WWII. No one hates war more than the Russians, which is why working them to make peace is really a very easy task. Russians were devastated by WWII and because they were an Ally and not one of the Defeated, they got nothing to rebuild their country or restore the lives of their people following such horrible losses. But like most great nations, they are very loyal to their Mother Russia and its security and survival, so when circumstances and duty call, they will fight.

I'm really looking forward to a new day of relations with Russia and I hope Trump and Tillerson can restore proper friendly relations with Russia so that they can become an Ally again like Great Britain and France. There is just no valid reason for the Americans to continue to treat Russia as an enemy, when they have never been one.

And as for some of our Senators, well, someone might want to ask why during the Tillerson hearings today, it was Menendez and Rubio, sons of Cuban immigrants who were attacking Tillerson over his relations with Russia. Maybe because their parents weren't here during WWII, they don't know the debt we owe to Russia, maybe there's a lot they don't know about American history, maybe there's a lot they don't know overall about our country. Something to think about.

Maybe Menendez should fly down to Mexico and ask them if flooding our border with illegals, diseases, criminals, gang members, terrorists, illegals from other countries, drugs and children who have been sent over by human traffickers HELP OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH MEXICO???

Time for Mexico to "help" our relationship by stopping this invasion of our Country and taking care of their own citizens.
