Democrats Upset with House GOP for Cutting Spending

Senate Democrats, who haven’t offered a budget in more than 1,000 days, are very upset with Republicans for wanting to stop Washington from spending money it doesn’t have.

Democrats now say the GOP is “ignoring” or “violating” the Budget Control Act by spending less and staying under legal spending caps in the new House budget.


As we’ve pointed out before (here and here), this attack is completely absurd.

But when asked about it at a press conference today, Speaker Boehner again explained that a spending “cap” is a limit on spending – not a required spending level – and compared spending caps to credit card limits:




BOEHNER: “People have limits on credit cards. That doesn’t mean that you’re required to spend up to the limit, it just says you can’t spend any more than that.”
This episode is a small example of the “contrast in visions” in Washington.

Democrats most certainly want more spending, more debt, and higher taxes – the same recipe that’s made it much harder for small businesses to hire new workers.

Republicans are keenly focused on creating a better environment for greater job growth by cutting spending, addressing high gas prices, fixing our broken tax code, and protecting America’s seniors.


“We all know that we’ve got a real fiscal problem here in Washington,” said Boehner, “and frankly we think that we can do much better.”
