Did The French Want The Statue Of Liberty To Stand For Immigration?

    5/18/2018

    ANDERS HAGSTROM

The French intended the Statue of Liberty to symbolize America’s openness to immigration, Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine claimed. But did they?

As I listen to French President Macron address Congress, I'm struck that it's the same day that the Supreme Court will hear the Muslim travel ban case. The French people recognized the U.S. as a nation of immigrants when they gifted us the Statue of Liberty.

As it turns out, no. The statue’s French creators intended for the colossus to celebrate independence and enlightenment. It was only later it came to symbolize the promise of immigration. In 1865, French political thinker and abolitionist Édouard René de Laboulaye suggested the people of France build a monument for the U.S. as a gift following the end of the Civil War. He wanted it to celebrate independence and recognize the connection between France and the U.S.

“This monument to independence will be executed in common by the two nations, joined together in this fraternal work as they once were to achieve independence,” he wrote.

Laboulaye hoped the monument would inspire the French people to learn from the U.S. system and call for democracy in France.

French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the colossus, shared Laboulaye’s desire to memorialize the principles of liberty. He originally devised a lighthouse in the shape of a robed woman with a torch intended for the Suez Canal, called “Egypt (or Progress) Brings Light to Asia,” but plans for the lighthouse fell through. In 1870, Bartholdi began to reshape that design into the Statue of “Liberty Enlightening the World.”

The statue became a symbol of immigration due in large part to American poet Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, “The New Colossus,” which is mounted on the base of the statue. Inspired by the plight of the immigrant, Lazarus dubbed Lady Liberty the “Mother of Exiles.” “Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” the poem reads.

Kaine misconstrued the meaning to make it seem French President Emmanuel Macron was opposed to President Donald Trump on immigration while the Supreme Court was considering his travel ban.

While it would’ve been convenient for Kaine if the French had wanted the U.S. to take in every migrant — no questions asked — but that’s just not the case. In reality, the French intended for the statue to encourage American independence and enlightenment.

No, the Statue of Liberty has absolutely nothing to do with immigration. It was about liberty, not immigration. That awful poem ruined the Statue of Liberty and has damned near ruined our country, it was unauthorized, and needs to be removed and returned to the woman's family.

That actual poem was written to help raise money to build the base to set the statue on. I get so tired of ####people insisting on trying to change the meaning of everything American to fit their agenda.

Origin of the poem on the Statute of Liberty

Just for the record, Emma Lazarus, who wrote the words which appears on the Statute of Liberty was a well-known socialist, and the “poem” which she wrote was suggested to be used to raise funds to build the statue’s pedestal.

Additionally, immigrants coming to America who passed the statute on their way to Elis Island were not granted entry into the United States for a number of reasons. One reason to be rejected was the likelihood of becoming a ward of the state and a public burden, and on this ground many were refused entry!

Is it not reasonable for American Citizens to reject being made into tax slaves to support the economic needs of millions upon millions of foreigners who have entered our country illegally and legally? Current statistics show that about 75 percent of immigrants from Mexico and Central America, legal and illegal, are on one or more taxpayer funded “program”.

And what about illegal aliens who work off the books in various trades on construction sites, and work below the going wage, and do not pay taxes on their earned wages, which is how they compete for America’s domestic jobs? Is this in the best interests of American Citizens who are unemployed?

I get the distinct impression that many of our politicians, like Senator Schumer and Tim Kaine have more compassion for those who have entered our country illegally than they do for American Citizens who are suffering the devastating consequences of illegal and legal immigration. And they have more compassion for them for a nefarious reason ___ creating a massive voting block dependent upon government cheese.

And what was our Founder’s thinking with regard to immigration?

Let us recall what Representative BURKE says during our Nations` first debate on a RULE OF NATURALIZATION, FEB. 3RD, 1790

Mr. BURKE thought it of importance to fill the country with useful men, such as farmers, mechanics, and manufacturers, and, therefore, would hold out every encouragement to them to emigrate to America. This class he would receive on liberal terms; and he was satisfied there would be room enough for them, and for their posterity, for five hundred years to come. There was another class of men, whom he did not think useful, and he did not care what impediments were thrown in their way; such as your European merchants, and factors of merchants, who come with a view of remaining so long as will enable them to acquire a fortune, and then they will leave the country, and carry off all their property with them. These people injure us more than they do us good, and, except in this last sentiment, I can compare them to nothing but leeches. They stick to us until they get their fill of our best blood, and then they fall off and leave us. I look upon the privilege of an American citizen to be an honorable one, and it ought not to be thrown away upon such people. There is another class also that I would interdict, that is, the convicts and criminals which they pour out of British jails. I wish sincerely some mode could be adopted to prevent the importation of such; but that, perhaps, is not in our power; the introduction of them ought to be considered as a high misdemeanor.

    JWK

American citizens are sick and tired of being made into tax slaves and forced to finance the personal economic needs of millions of foreigners who have invaded America’s borders.
