Tuesday, 23 June 2015Cruz Flips Against TPA/ Fast Track; Sessions Hammers ObamaTrade

    Written by William F. Jasper

Citing corruption, “backroom deal-making,” and leaks that show the Obama administration is violating its assurances not to include immigration in its trade agreements, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas; shown on left) reversed his earlier support for Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) and voted Tuesday against the cloture measure to end debate on Fast Track authority for the president. Even with Cruz’s defection, however, President Obama and his Republican allies in the Senate succeeded in getting the 60-vote super-majority they needed to cut off debate. The 60-37 vote sets up a vote on TPA itself, which is scheduled for Wednesday. If it passes then, it will go to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law. Although most commentators are viewing TPA passage now as a done deal, it is still possible that it could be derailed again, as recent history has shown the battles over these pseudo-“free trade” pacts are full of surprises.

In an op-ed published on Brietbart.com today, Senator Cruz explained why he has switched from pro to anti on TPA. “The American people do not trust President Obama. And they do not trust Republican leadership in Congress,” Cruz wrote. “And the reason is simple: for far too long, politicians in Washington have not told the truth.”

Ted Cruz Vows to Vote Against TPP Trade Deal in Iowa

    The Associated Press

    by ALEX SWOYER21 Nov 2015Washington, DC2069

GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that he would vote against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal between the United States and 11 other countries on Friday while campaigning in Iowa.

According to the Des Moines Register, Cruz said he is “deeply concerned” with the trade pact.

“While Cruz said he supports free trade, he believes the Trans-Pacific Partnership would undermine U.S. immigration laws and the nation’s sovereignty,” reported the Des Moines Register.

“There are a number of Republicans on that (debate) stage who support TPP, who support (the Trade Promotion Authority),” Cruz stated. “I voted against TPA and I intend to vote against TPP.”

TPA – Trade Promotion Authority – is the legislation that Congress passed in June that granted President Obama fast-track trade authority so that trade deals – such as the TPP – only get an up or down vote by Congress, which cannot offer any amendments.

“I believe we can negotiate a much better agreement with a strong conservative president than we have with Barack Obama,” Cruz stated.

Cruz was visiting the Hawkeye state following a recent endorsement by Iowa CongressmanRep. Steve King (R-IA).

A member of the Republican Party of Iowa’s governing board, Loras Schulte, a according to the Des Moines Register, “announced Friday that he would resign his position and endorse Cruz.”

“I believe Ted Cruz represents the best chance we have to restore not only what is great about America, but of providing the leadership the international community is lacking,” a statement from Schulte read.

Ted Cruz voted for the TPA when it passed the Senate the first time before Donald Trump announced he was running for President. When the TPA came back to the Senate from the House with an amendment to fund TAA, Trade Adjustment Act to fund retraining of workers that were laid-off by TPP, Cruz voted against the TAA amendment, but the amendment passed, and then Cruz voted against the TPA.

This all occurred after Trump had announced he was running and opposed the TPP.

His vote against the TPA and his position on TPA and TPP have absolutely nothing to do with Trump.

Without speculation, his reasoning is provided in the two links I provided.

Cruz voted for TPA when it was in the Senate. He went with Paul Ryan on a media tour promoting TPA. He co-authored an Op-Ed article for the Wall Street Journal promoting TPA. He voted against it after it came back from the House with a TAA amendment to fund retraining for American Workers laid-off by TPP. He's on record voting against the amendment, which passed, so he voted against the TPA. There were no changes in immigration from the Senate version he supported, promoted and voted for and the House version that came back to the Senate with the TAA Amendment.

TPA passed, legislation he supported, promoted and voted for. When it came back from the House with a TAA amendment, he voted against it. He supported TPA when American Workers laid off by TPP wouldn't get any assistance. He voted against TPA when it had TAA funding for American Workers laid off by TPP. But the amended version passed the Senate anyway and is now the law. Those are facts.

I hope he votes against TPP. But that doesn't change the TPA and it doesn't change the fact that he not only supported TPA, he actively promoted TPA on a media blitz with Paul Ryan, and that he voted for TPA when it had no funding to help American Workers laid-off by TPP.

Those are the facts on the record in the US Senate and the media. He's in an interview with Breithart with Paul Ryan promoting TPA. He's in the Wall Street Journal with an article he wrote supporting, promoting and selling the TPA.

Whether Trump entering the race opposed to these trade deals had anything to do with his change of heart in late June when the bill came back from the House with the TAA amendment or not, the fact remains that Cruz supported TPA before Trump entered the race and opposed it after Trump entered the race.

So there you have it. He voted for TPA the first time around, but voted against it in final voting before passage and has vowed not to support the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Yes, that's right, he voted for it before he voted against it, and the bill passed the Congress and was signed into law by Obama.

I agree, Cruz had nothing to do with final passage of the TPA.

Other than supporting it, going on a media blitz to promote it and voting for it the first time to pass it in the US Senate and advance it to the House where it passed handily but with an Amendment to fund retraining of American Workers laid-off by the TPP. The fact that he didn't want to help American Workers laid-off by the trade deal he wanted to fast track is hardly a salvation moment, especially when the Senate he had already lobbied had more than enough votes to pass the final bill without his final vote.

Cruz lobbied the TPA but as soon as the House put some assistance on it for all the American Workers who would be laid-off by it, disgruntling his Tea Partiers who supported TPA but without any assistance spending for workers laid off by the TPP, he voted against it selling American Workers down the river to make himself look like a "fiscal hawk". The best thing I can compare this evil to is an arsonist setting a house on fire and then calling the homeowners insurance company behind their backs and canceling their policy. That's how evil Ted Cruz really is in my opinion.
