Trump floats possibility of Giuliani replacing Sessions as AG: report

    07/24/17 10:40 AM EDT

President Trump has floated the possibility of replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), Axios reported Monday.

Trump broached the idea in internal discussions about bringing his staunch ally into the folds of his administration, sources within the West Wing told the news outlet.

Before an interview last week with The New York Times, Trump had already expressed anger and frustration at Sessions for recusing himself from the Justice Department's investigation into Russian meddling in the presidential election, Axios reports.

Trump, during the interview, opined that Sessions's decision to recuse himself was "unfair" to him and that he would've likely picked another person to lead the Justice Department if he had known Sessions would recuse himself.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump went after Sessions, calling him “beleaguered” and questioning why the attorney general and federal investigators are not looking into Hillary Clinton, his Democratic opponent in the presidential race and a former secretary of State, for her “crimes” and ties to Russia.Axios reports that Trump regularly considers personnel switch-ups, but doesn’t always act. Pondering about bringing in Giuliani may fall under this umbrella.

The report, however, comes after Trump tapped Anthony Scaramucci to serve as the White House communications director on Friday, leading Sean Spicer to resign as White House press secretary.

Sessions did what the thought he had to do, although I don't think he had to do it. His only contacts were because he's a Senator, that's his job to meet with Ambassadors. You shouldn't have to recuse when you're doing your job. Sessions had every right to be at political events where an Ambassador shows up. That doesn't qualify you from serving as Attorney General in any way, at least it shouldn't.

If Trump touches Sessions his own base is going to fracture like a large chunk of Antarctica breaking off into the ocean!

Very, very disappointed in President Trump! I think he's purposely feeding this to the media to take some of the pressure off his son and son-in-law.

I'm sure a couple die-hard Trump supporters on here won't agree with me on this, but I have a lot more trust and faith in Sessions on the immigration issue than I ever did Trump. Sessions has been extremely consistent on the border security/immigration issue for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for President Trump.

According to DOJ policy, Jeff Sessions did the right thing recusing himself. President Trump is frustrated because Sessions didn't turn out to be the 'yes' man he envisioned.

No, no, no. Anyone but Giuliani. Trump has had too much trouble getting his administration together to dump Sessions now, no matter what Session's liabilities are.

People talk so much about what Trump ought to be doing but isn't. What about Sessions? What should Sessions be doing but isn't? It seem like he could be a little more aggressive about something, anything at this point.

    Man, how things have changed:

In major blow to Ted Cruz, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama endorses Donald Trump for GOP nomination

By Jose A. DelReal and Robert Costa February 28, 2016

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's White House bid during a joint appearance in his home state. (Reuters)

MADISON, Ala. — Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), whose hard-line conservative stances on immigration and trade have made him a favorite of the party’s base, endorsed Donald Trump's White House bid during a joint appearance here in his home state Sunday.

"Politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration. Have they done it? Donald Trump will do it," Sessions said at the Madison City Schools Stadium, where thousands gathered to hear Trump speak. “I’ve told Donald Trump this isn’t a campaign, this is a movement.”

The endorsement represents a major blow to Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.), one of Trump's two chief rivals for the Republican nomination. Cruz has touted his strict positions on border security and deportation, leaning on his strident commitment to conservative ideology as a key rationale for his candidacy. In the run-up to the March 1 Super Tuesday primary elections, Cruz has tried to undermine Trump's conservative bona fides on immigration reform, characterizing his plan as “amnesty.”

The announcement is the latest in a series of high-profile endorsements by prominent GOP voices including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arizona governor Jan Brewer. Sessions’s appearance came as a surprise for those in attendance, who cheered when he took the stage.

“When I talk about immigration and when I talk about illegal immigration and all the problems with crime and everything else, I think of a great man,” Trump said in introducing Sessions. “Sweet Home Alabama” finished playing as Trump took the stage.

“That is so great. You know, he’s an incredible guy,” Trump said after Sessions spoke.

Trump has made immigration reform and border security a linchpin of his presidential run, calling for the mass deportation of 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States and promising to build a massive wall alongside the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of Trump’s critics have accused him of xenophobia; others have argued that his plan to build the wall — and to force Mexico to pay for it through aggressive diplomacy — is unrealistic.

The Sessions endorsement also comes as Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) — who has been locked in a bitter fight with Cruz for second place — have made an aggressive push to characterize Trump as a false conservative who has made promises he does not intend to keep.

Cruz and Sessions, one of the most conservative members of the Senate, have forged a close relationship in recent years. Cruz has regularly made reference to Sessions on the trail, emphasizing the mutual respect between the two.

Sessions appeared with Cruz in Daphne, Ala., in December and has defended the senator from Texas against accusations that he once supported a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants. Sessions has supported Cruz’s claim that an amendment he offered, which stripped the bill of a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants but granted legal status, was intended as a "poison pill" that would kill the legislation.

President Trump needs to quit dragging Jeff Sessions through the mud and allow him to do his job as our top law enforcement official in the country! Return the loyalty AG Session has shown you, Mr. President.
