Register to vote: Mail-in deadline is Monday

It's so hot your flowers are shriveling, there are brown patches the size of San Juan County in your lawn and the air conditioning repair guy hasn't seen his family in weeks.
So it's understandable that despite all the media chatter about Rudy and Mitt, Hillary and Barack, elections are not foremost on your mind. Elections happen in the cool of the far-away fall, during football season, after the kids are back in school.
But if you're not registered to vote, here's a news flash. The primary election in Utah's cities and towns is fast approaching. It happens Sept. 11 (an infamous date, easy to remember). And the deadline to register to vote by mail is Aug. 13. That's Monday. As in this coming Monday.
Really. We're not kidding.
But rest easy. Even if you're not registered, there's no reason to break a sweat. Just pour yourself a cold one, fire up the home or office computer (the boss won't mind - it's your patriotic duty) and go to the Salt Lake County clerk's Web site, www.clerk.slco.org. There you will find a picture of Sherrie Swensen's smiling face and, next to it, a place to click on "Elections Division." Then click on "Register to Vote" and you can download the registration form.
The site will give you instructions on what forms of ID you need to include when you register by mail. It also will let you check your voter status to determine whether you are

registered.
No computer? No problem. Pick up a registration form at a post office, city recorder's office, county clerk's office or a public library. But remember. That form has to be in the mail, postmarked, no later than Monday, Aug. 13.
If you don't mind stopping by the clerk's office at 2001 S. State, you can register in person before Aug. 27.
The same deadlines apply statewide. Voter registration forms and the locations of all county clerk's offices are available on the state election Web site: www.elections.utah.gov.
OK, so why would you bother to vote in the municipal primary election?
In Salt Lake City, there are nine reasons. That's the number of candidates in the primary election for mayor. Only two of them will emerge successfully from the primary and appear on the Nov. 6 municipal general election ballot.
No other mayor elections are in play in Salt Lake County, though there are scattered primaries for city council seats.
But you'll definitely want to be registered. Because the voters will decide the fate of the school vouchers referendum at the polls on Nov. 6. You wouldn't want to miss out on that little scrimmage, right?
