The rest of the story, on illegal immigration into Texas

MCALLEN, Texas – AUGUST 07: U.S. Border Patrol agents detain undocumented immigrants after they crossed the border from Mexico into Texas, near McAllen. The state’s Rio Grande Valley corridor is the busiest illegal border crossing into the United States. Border security and immigration have become major issues in the U.S. presidential campaigns. Our newspaper’s regular Viewpoints columnist Richard Parker had a zinger of a column the other day, with commentator Ann Coulter and GOP blowhard Donald Trump on the receiving end of his lash.
The subject was illegal immigration. It was partly a put-you-there piece, with Parker assuming the role of the reader’s eyes and ears on the border. He depicted a somnolent place. He depicted calm, perhaps as opposed to the immigration storm of last year. Witness:
If this is chaos, bursting with desperation and crime, then it is the most deceptive chaos I ever saw; the funny thing is I saw the same thing — which is to say, not much — a few months ago in Laredo. Apprehensions are way down. Crime is down. There has been no net migration from Mexico in years. The only the thing up is what should be called the Phony Crisis, stirred up by Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Apprehensions way down? Not so fast. As compared to what? There’s a fuller telling of the story.
The Brownsville Herald writes about “an unprecedented influx” into the main local migrant shelter and an “uptick” in apprehensions. Excerpt:
Recently, 750 people were apprehended in one day, according to Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora. He said they are seeing an average of 250 to 300 people more than in the recent months. He attributes this recent uptick to the summer months and said it is nowhere close to the nearly 1,500 daily apprehensions they were seeing at the same time last year.
From the San Antonio Express-News, in wrapping up fiscal year numbers in December:
The total number of immigrants apprehended in the Valley during fiscal year 2014 increased by about 100,000, to 256,393.
A quarter-million people is more than a few. It’s by far the highest annual number of apprehensions in that Border Patrol sector going back to fiscal 2000.
Find the Border Patrol chart, for comparison purposes, through this Politifact piece. You’ll see wide, site-specific fluctuations in apprehensions. The Laredo sector, for example, had more than 100K apprehensions in fiscal 2000. They eventually fell to more than half that, settling in the 30-40-50k range for several years.
Other sectors are up dramatically in the past 15 years, most prominently the RGV.
Big picture: Illegal border crossings into Texas are not down to a trickle, if anyone got that impression. Last fiscal year all Texas Border Patrol sectors totaled about 340,000 apprehensions, about triple five years previous and in the same neighborhood as 15 years previous. It’s a stubborn problem.
Polls show that immigration ranks high with Texans as a priority issue. It doesn’t work to dismiss them as gullible, paranoid or hateful. The apprehension numbers speak for themselves.
I’m not writing this to lift up or defend Donald Trump or Ann Coulter. They don’t need me for that.
But if you want to attack either one for their comments or positions, you’ve still got to face the immigration facts.

Get these people out of our country and keep them out. All of them. I don't care what country they came from, I don't care what language they speak, I don't care what their motives are, I don't care about their "dreams", I don't care how old or young they are, I don't care how long they've been here, I don't care about them at all while they're in the United States in violation of US immigration law.
GET. THEM. OUT. PERIOD.A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

Follow the money.
The media loves to promote an image of desperate, near-starvation illegals. Bulloney. Many of these folks have jobs in Mexico and other Latin American countries. They're sneaking into the United States, because they can make *more money* here.
