Donald J. Trump, the real estate mogul and reality television celebrity, announced Tuesday that he would seek the Republican presidential nomination from the eponymous Trump Tower in New York.

"We need somebody that literally will take this country and make it great again. We can do that," Trump told a crowd of supporters. "...So ladies and gentleman, I am officially running for president of the United States."

The tycoon's announcement, according to people familiar with his plans, is set to be followed by the release of a self-drafted financial summary of his assets, including an outline of his debts. Robert Costa and Matea Gold had a preview Monday:

Trump’s speech announcing his decision is likely to center on his career and fortune. He is expected to cast himself as an entrepreneur and outsider eager to tangle with the party establishment and U.S. economic rivals abroad, such as China.The financial statement drafted by his office is aimed at demonstrating his success as a businessman, as well as proving to skeptical GOP leaders that he is willing to disclose as much as other candidates at this stage.

Trump has publicly flirted with a White House bid for several campaign cycles, with critics dismissing the highly public decision-making process as attempts to increase his media exposure.

But Trump began indicating earlier this year that he was seriously considering a 2016 run. In addition to launching a presidential exploratory committee in March, he also decided in March to delay production on his long-running reality show, "The Apprentice," in order to focus his efforts on a potential campaign. In February, he began hiring staff in early voting states.

Trump enters the race with nearly unmatched name recognition and a powerful real estate brand -- but a reputation for a quick temper and attention-grabbing celebrity feuds.

Trump has frequently found himself embroiled in seemingly trivial spats with various public figures, including Arianna Huffington, Rosie O’Donnell, and Cher. His bluntness was directed at allies as well: into the political sphere: in 2012, after serving as a surrogate for GOP presidential Mitt Romney, he questioned the campaign's strategy. "Romney campaign used me in 6 primary states and won every one- they should have used me in Florida and Ohio & he would be President," he tweeted.

The business mogul, who has never held public office, enters an extremely crowded field of Republican presidential hopefuls, now numbering a dozen major candidates. And it remains to be seen how he will distinguish himself from his rivals on policy issues, in part because he's steered clear of many policy specifics: last month, he raised eyebrows when he said he had a "foolproof plan" to defeat the Islamic State terrorist group, but refused to reveal details because "I don’t want the enemy to know what I’m doing."

The Democratic National Committee immediately lampooned Trump's candidacy, indirectly taking a swipe at the entire GOP presidential field.

“Today, Donald Trump became the second major Republican candidate to announce for president in two days. He adds some much-needed seriousness that has previously been lacking from the GOP field, and we look forward to hearing more about his ideas for the nation," DNC spokesperson Holly Shulman said in a statement.

What's clear is, Trump -- who has been traveling heavily in early-voting states -- plans to tout his business credentials and paint himself as a Washington outsider. In his announcement speech, Trump aggressively touted his business savvy while knocking the political class for failing to deliver on promises.

"Politicians are all talk, no action. Nothing is going to get done. They will not bring us, believe me, to the promised land. They will not," Trump said. "I've been on the circuit making speeches and I hear my fellow Republicans — and they're wonderful people, I like them! They all want me to support them! — ... I watch the speeches of these people and they say, 'The sun will rise, the moon will set! All sorts of wonderful things will happen!'"

Though Trump faces an uphill battle to be taken seriously by his rivals, political watchers, and the media, his enormous wealth means that he will be able to fund his own campaign out of pocket.

"I don't need anybody's money. I'm using my own money. ... I'm really rich," he told supporters.

NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Billionaire Donald Trump has announced he will run for the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential campaign on Tuesday.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am officially running for president of the United States and we are going to make our country great again," Trump said, announcing his campaign.

Trump, worth about $9 billion, spoke at an 11 a.m. rally at Trump Tower in New York City, N.Y.

"Our country is in serious trouble. We don't have victories anymore. When was the last time anybody saw us beating, let's say China, in a trade deal. They kill us. I beat China all the time," Trump said in his speech.

"When do we beat Mexico at the border? They laugh at us, at our stupidity," Trump said, stating that Mexico is "killing us economically."

The United States has become a "dumping ground for everyone else's problems," as Trump spoke on the topic of illegal immigration. "China has our jobs, Mexico has our jobs."

"Our enemies are getting stronger and stronger by the day and we as a country are getting weaker," according to Trump.

Trump, 69, famous for his wealth, real estate finesse and The Apprentice reality TV series, has previously toyed with the idea of the presidency before. He talked about running for the presidential elections in 2008 and again in 2012, but never formally announced.
Trump has not strayed far from commenting on politics or keeping connections with politicians, such as former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin.

He's been critical of President Barack Obama, previously being one of the voices openly questioning if Obama was born in the United States and calling for the president to release his birth certificate.

Obama's foreign policy also falls under Trump's criticism, stating the president "messed up the balance in the Middle East." Trump said he has a solution to defeat the Islamic State.

"I do know what to do and I would know how to bring [the Islamic State] to the table or, beyond that, defeat [the Islamic State] very quickly... and I'm not gonna tell you what it is tonight," Trump told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.

"Why won't you tell? We need all the help we can get!" Van Susteren replied.

"I don't want the enemy to know what I'm doing. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to tell at some point, but there is a method of defeating them quickly and effectively and having total victory," Trump replied.

Trump also is critical of members of his own political party.

"I'm the most successful person ever to run for president... I have a Gucci store that's worth more money than Romney," Trump told The Des Moines Register. "Romney disappointed us. He ran a horrible campaign. We can't let that happen again."

He also set former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in his sights, who announced his presidential campaign on Monday.

"Do we really need another Bush in the White House -- we have had enough of them," Trump said, referring to former President George W. Bush and former President George H.W. Bush -- Jeb's brother and father, respectively.

For the Republican nomination, Trump faces a wide and seemingly growing field of competitors.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham; Former New York Gov. George Pataki; former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum; neurosurgeon Ben Carson; Texas Sen. Ted Cruz; former HP CEO Carly Fiorina; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio have announced campaigns.

For the Democratic nomination, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen.Bernie Sanders, Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and former Maryland Gov.Martin O'Malley are in the running.

I think this is FABULOUS! He certainly is a good business man and HE ISN'T BORING!! LOL!

Right now I see Trump as someone whom has a zero chance of sitting in the White House. Actually, he may take votes away from Scott Walker who seems to be consistently polling in the top three. My prediction is, Trump will be among the first few to fade out. My support of Walker is subject to change if he even hints at going back to his old way of thinking, but right now he's my personal choice. I honestly think Sen. Sessions, Gov. Abbott, and other immigration hardliners have set Walker on the straight and narrow on immigration.

In March 2011 Forbes estimated Donald Trump's net worth to be $2.7 billion, with a $60 million salary. Many praise and analyze his “success” as if it were self-made, and they fail to attribute the proper credit to others in society where it is deserved. Despite what Trump may espouse, his success would have been in no way possible without his father, the general public, and the US government. Unfortunately, Trump decided to forget or selectively ignore these truths while forming his political philosophy, a sentiment made particularly clear during his brief bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Trump was born in New York City in 1946, the son of real estate tycoon Fred Trump. Fred Trump’s business success not only provided Donald Trump with a posh youth of private schools and economic security but eventually blessed him with an inheritance worth an estimated $40 million to $200 million. It is critical to note, however, that his father’s success, which granted Donald Trump such a great advantage, was enabled and buffered by governmental financing programs. In 1934, while struggling during the Great Depression, financing from the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) allowed Fred Trump to revive his business and begin building a multitude of homes in Brooklyn, selling at $6,000 apiece. Furthermore, throughout World War II, Fred Trump constructed FHA-backed housing for US naval personnel near major shipyards along the East Coast.

In 1974 Donald Trump became president of his father’s organization. During the 15 years following his ascension, he expanded and innovated the corporation, buying and branding buildings, golf courses, hotels, casinos, and other recreational facilities. In 1980 he established The Trump Organization to oversee all of his real estate operations.

Trump eventually found himself in serious financial trouble. In 1990, due to excessive leveraging, The Trump Organization revealed that it was $5 billion in debt ($8.8 billion by some estimates), with $1 billion personally guaranteed by Trump himself. The survival of the company was made possible only by a bailout pact agreed upon in August of that same year by some 70 banks, allowing Trump to defer on nearly $1 billion in debt, as well as to take out second and third mortgages on almost all of his properties. If it were not for the collective effort of all banks and parties involved in that 1990 deal, Trump’s business would have gone bankrupt and failed.

In 1995 Trump took Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Inc. public and received a substantial financial boost from society and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations that enable the market to function. He initially sold 10 million shares at $14 per share and then in 1996 sold 13.25 million shares at $32.50 a share. This initial public offering granted Trump’s company a stability and legitimacy that would have been impossible without millions of people around the world trusting his organization and investing with the hope of shared success.

Despite the clear societal and governmental assistance described above, Trump continues to be outspoken in his criticism of government. In his bookThe America We Deserve, Trump explains that “the greatest threat to the American Dream is the idea that dreamers need close government scrutiny and control. Job one for us is to make sure the public sector does a limited job, and no more.” This quote proves to be particularly ironic when considering Trump’s feelings about eminent domain laws. He was quoted as saying, “I happen to agree with it 100 percent” when speaking of the 2005 Supreme Court decision on Kolo v. New London, which affirmed the government’s ability to transfer land from one private owner to another for the purpose of economic development in the area. In fact, Trump attempted to take advantage of eminent domain laws on multiple occasions, once even demanding that an elderly widow give up her home so that he could build a limousine parking lot.

Perhaps more disturbing than his hypocritical condemnation of the government is his failure to acknowledge anyone’s contributions, save his own, in the creation of his success. At the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump made clear his feelings on the creation of his wealth: “Over the years I’ve participated in many battles and have really almost come out very, very victorious every single time. I’ve beaten many people and companies, and I’ve won many wars. I have fairly but intelligently earned many billions of dollars, which in a sense was both a scorecard and acknowledgment of my abilities.” Furthermore, Trump apparently sees no benefit in supporting taxes to maintain institutions such as the Securities and Exchange Commission to regulate the stock market, in which he publicly trades his company, or the court system, which actively protects his property rights: “We are the highest taxed nation—I would tax foreign countries that are ripping off the US and lower taxes for Americans.”

From the moment of his birth, Trump was set up for success. The large inheritance left to him by his father, coupled with the contributions and the protections of society and the US government made his ascension to the Forbes 400 list almost inevitable. Nevertheless, Trump fails to recognize this phenomenon and continues to express his belief that he did it alone.
