Donald Trump on Saturday praised the modern conservative movement's "founding mother" Phyllis Schlafly for her fierce devotion to country, family and God, saying her legacy will inspire every "underdog" who "defies the odds and delivers a win for the people."
In brief remarks at the funeral Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, Trump said Schlafly was "there for me when it was not at all fashionable."
"America has always been about the underdog and also been about defying the odds," he said, adding: "The idea that so-called little people or the little person that she loved so much could beat the system, oftentimes the rigged system."
Schlafly, who died Monday at 92, became an iconic figure in the conservative movement for her battles against feminists in the 1970s, and her fight to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment. She was a supporter of Trump's presidential campaign.
"She loved her country, she loved her family and she loved her God," the GOP presidential nominee said. "Her legacy will live on every time some underdog out-matched and out-gunned defies the odds and delivers a win for the people."
Trump also praised her trailblazing in the grassroots movement.
"You've been hearing a lot about it – that the American grass roots is more powerful than all the world's special interests put together," he said. "That's the way she felt. She's always felt that way. That's the romance of America."
"That's the story of the mother and the patriot that we honor here today," he added.
