Donald Trump is dominating in the critical early-voting state of South Carolina, a new poll shows.
Trump, the presumptive front-runner for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, got the support of 37% of registered Republican voters in the Palmetto State, a Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll released Wednesday found.
Trump was followed by surging retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who got 21%, the poll, taken Sept. 3-6, showed.
The next closest contenders, however, trailed significantly, with the remaining 15 GOP candidates all in the single digits.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz both got the support of 6% of voters, while former tech exec Carly Fiorina, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio all got 4%.
"What you're seeing to some extent in South Carolina and nationally is Donald Trump and Ben Carson are sucking all the wind out of the air," said Tom Jensen, Public Policy Polling's director.
The survey represents another significant marker of progress for the campaign of Trump, who is also leading in recent polls taken in the early-voting Iowa and New Hampshire.
