No candidate for President or any other office should be hounded by the media to release income tax returns. It's not required by law, the privacy of these these returns is a matter of federal law, the practice of candidates flopping out their tax returns shows they have no respect of their own for these laws and the reasons for them, and the dishonest media should be the LAST entity of persons demanding to see someone's tax returns. We should have no tax returns for them to hound our candidates and officials about. There should be no income tax to begin with.

FairTax Act of 2015: HR 25 in the US House of Representatives and S 155 in the US Senate.

Do Not Release Tax Returns to the Dishonest Media.

    VOTE TRUMP!

    RYAN'S GOTTA GO!

Why would he release them during an audit. There will be millions of people scrutinizing them. Why stir up more trouble during an audit? He doesn't even have to release them at all. What would we learn from them anyway. You would have to be a tax expert to understand them. So really it does the average voter no good. We can only trust what the media says about them. That is one thing I can not do.

They are grasping at straws! Nobody cares about Trump taxes. Go ahead and waste millions of dollars trying to throw dirt on The Donald. Should be ashamed of themselves and use that money for some good...like donating it to our Veteran's! All the millions WASTED on attack ads...for what...slime bags!

It's so pathetic. And the only people asking for the returns are people who already hate him, so what's the point? Where is the political value? I see: ZERO.

As I said on another thread concerning this topic, any individual running for the highest office of the land should be fully vetted. When you run for President of the United States it should be with the expectation that your life will be comprehensively viewed from top to bottom. This vetting should include finances, business relationships, family members ..... or whatever. Once the vetting has been done it is left to the voting public on whether they find the character of the candidate acceptable. Again, no candidate should have an expectation of privacy when it comes to vetting his (or her) background.

A friend of Donald Trump’s recently approached him to suggest that he will eventually have to release his tax returns, as every presidential nominee has for decades. The friend told Trump that he should do it before the GOP convention to ensure everyone can process what’s in the returns and help make any revelations “old news” by November. If Trump didn’t do that, he was warned, the odds of politicized leaks from his returns were high, citing several examples from the Obama era, including the illegal leaking of some of Romney’s tax information by the IRS in 2012.

“What will you do if the returns come out as part of an October surprise?” Trump was asked. Trump pondered the question and replied, “I’ll say they aren’t mine.” That stunning answer is the essence of Donald Trump. “It’s exactly what I’d expect him to say,” Fox Business’s Charlie Gasparino, who has known Trump for decades, told me. But while Donald Trump has made a life out of bluffing his way past problems and cavalier comments, it’s harder to succeed doing that at the presidential level. Trump may be inching up in polls now, but one sharp wrong turn could send him spinning off the road. A political party that nominates Trump without seeing his tax returns could be committing political suicide and endangering dozens of down-ballot GOP candidates. Even Superman met his match with kryptonite.

Nixon released his tax returns under audit. Why can't Trump?

    by Jeanne Sahadi @CNNMoneyMay 11, 2016: 2:28 PM ET

Donald Trump once again has said he won't release his tax returns because they're under audit.

He indicated in an Associated Press story that he would do so after the audit ends, which may not happen before November.

Yet here's the thing: There's nothing preventing Trump from releasing his tax returns now. Not the IRS, not the law, not even precedent.

Turns out Richard Nixon publicly released his tax returns while they were under audit in 1973, at the height of the Watergate investigation.

But Watergate wasn't the reason, according to tax historian Joe Thorndike.

In the summer and fall of that year, "Nixon was engulfed by a controversy over his personal taxes. An outsize charitable donation was the proximate cause, but the scandal expanded to include numerous issues with the returns Nixon had filed between 1968 and 1972," Thorndike noted in a soon-to-be-published paper.

Interestingly it was that very tax controversy -- not Watergate -- that gave rise to one of Nixon's most famous quotes, Thorndike found. "People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook," Nixon told reporters in November 1973. "Well, I am not a crook."

He even went so far as to invite the Joint Committee on Taxation to also examine his returns. It did, and found Nixon owed another $476,431 -- or about $2.5 million in today's dollars. The IRS came to a similar conclusion.

Related: Trump says he can't release tax returns because of audits

    But back to Trump.

It's certainly understandable why someone -- a public figure with a complicated financial life no less -- would not want to release his tax returns, especially when they're under audit. After all, why invite the added scrutiny from tax experts coast to coast?

The problem with that argument, though, is this: Trump is applying for the biggest and arguably most important job in the world.

And a requirement of that job in modern times is transparency.

While not required by law, full tax return disclosures have come to be expected of presidential nominees as well as every sitting president, audit or no.

"Americans have good reason to worry about the tax behavior of high-ranking officials. After all, when Nixon was actually serving as president, he was claiming unjustified deductions and failing to report all his income," Thorndike noted.

When asked to comment on the fact that Nixon had released his returns under audit, a Trump campaign spokesman said, "Mr. Trump is undergoing a routine audit. The documentation of this is available on our website."

Every candidate should have the expectation of privacy under the Internal Revenue Service. There is no valid reason for any candidate to waive this right. Federal Election Laws do not require release of tax returns for this very reason.
