Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump defended Planned Parenthood during an interview Tuesday night, doubling down on his remarks that part of the group should be funded.

“They do good things,” Trump said during an interview with Sean Hannity that aired on Fox News.

“There's two Planned Parenthoods, in a way. You have it as an abortion clinic. Now that's actually a fairly small part of what they do, but it’s a brutal part and I'm totally against it,” Trump said.

“They also, however, service women,” Trump said, adding later, “We have to help women. A lot of women are helped. So we have to look at the positives for Planned Parenthood.”

Trump's comments immediately drew fire from anti-abortion-rights advocates, who say that abortion represents a larger portion of what the organization does and that it should be entirely defunded.

The Susan B. Anthony List blasted the billionaire businessman, saying he should have stuck with his remark earlier on Tuesday describing Planned Parenthood as “an abortion factory.”

“Donald Trump completely misleads Americans by repeating tired Planned Parenthood talking points,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, the group's president, said in a statement Wednesday.

Dannenfelser cited Planned Parenthood's annual reports to say that its “abortions are on the rise,” to nearly a million in the past three years, while “non-abortion services have dropped significantly.”

The prominent anti-abortion-rights group initially withheld most of its fire from Trump on Tuesday when he drew heat for saying parts of Planned Parenthood should be funded — a week after saying he supported shutting down the government in order to defund the group in the wake of several undercover videos.

A sixth video from an anti-abortion-rights group, the Center for Medical Progress, was released early Wednesday.

For its part, Planned Parenthood praised Trump's remarks earlier Tuesday when on the question of funding he said on CNN that he would look at other “good aspects” of Planned Parenthood.

“Donald Trump seems to have realized that banning all abortions, shutting down the government, and defunding Planned Parenthood are extreme positions that are way too far outside the mainstream for even him to take,” Eric Ferrero, vice president for communications, said in a statement shared with The Hill.

“We hope that the rest of the GOP field will wake up and reconsider their extreme and unpopular positions on defunding preventive care, abortion bans, and the other economic issues that women and their families care about,” he added.

Trump pivoted during the Fox interview to hit Jeb Bush, another Republican presidential candidate, over a recent remark on funding for women's health. Trump has battled in recent days accusations of sexism over remarks regarding Fox News host Megyn Kelly.

“If Mr. Trump is truly concerned about women’s health, he should support immediate defunding of Planned Parenthood and the reallocation of those funds to organizations better suited to women’s health care needs,” Dannenfelser said Wednesday.

IMO, Trump is wrong on this. Any government funds given to planned parenthood releases money for abortions. So the government may not be giving money directly for the abortions, but they certainly are giving it indirectly! "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."

That's good of Donald Trump! Planned Parenthood has been cleared in 11 states of any wrong-doing and 2 people associated with that fake video scam/fraud were indicted by a Texas grand jury for crimes that could get them 20 years in prison.

I think Trump is right on this. If the US government defunded everything that someone somewhere doesn't want to pay for, then we would have no government at all.

The only solution is the FairTax where you don't have to pay the federal government if and when you're unhappy with it. You can buy used, save your money and use your Rebate to pay the tax on essentials.

People who believe in liberty, real liberty, should all support the FairTax.

There is no way you can 'partially' fund an abortion clinic. Either you support abortion, or you don't.

Do they help some women, probably. Could that help be given in some other way - absolutely.

As far as I know, all charges were dropped.

One of the charges was tampering with a government document - using fake DL.

Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if that Houston DA would be as diligent about 'fake documents' when dealing with the many, many illegals who are using fake documents in this state.

I think I know what Trump is talking about. Planned Parenthood also offers support and information on prenatal care. This is only natural since informing women about abortion services requires them to explain the same things that a woman should now about gestation that a woman who wants to complete the pregnancy to birth should also know. You can't separate being informed on one or the other. A woman who seeks birth control to prevent pregnancies should also have this information.

But Planned Parenthood is all about "planning" parenthood which fundamentally means being able to prevent parenthood when you don't want to have any children and are sexually active. Nobody has sex for the purposes of reproduction. They have sex for the intense physical and emotional gratification that it provides. And nobody who is sexually active should be obligated to parenthood just because they are having sex. This is ridiculous and is not compelled by any wholesome human society in the history of human existence. This is why Planned Parenthood and other birth control information and service providers should be funded by the government.

There are two ways to prevent child bearing when men and women who have sex do not want to bear children. You prevent pregnancy while the act is under way, or you terminate the pregnancy after the act. This is how the Pill works, by inducing menstruation, even though a fertilized egg might be present. It's also how the "morning after" pill works.

Part of prenatal care also means identifying potential problems with the pregnancy where either the woman or her host are at risk. You check for birth defects or conditions where the woman's health might be threatened by the pregnancy. Either case might suggest an abortion even where the woman hoped to bring it to term. It's always best to catch these things early and sometimes they can be identified even before pregnancy and Planned Parenthood provides information on these as well.

Trump cannot hope to separate abortion services from prenatal care at Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is not going to be turned into one of those "alternative", "life affirming" prenatal care clinics where they don't really do anything for women except prevent them from getting an abortion and terrify them or shame them for even possibly imagining such a thing.

“Abolition of a woman's right to abortion, when and if she wants it, amounts to compulsory maternity: a form of rape by the State.”― Edward Abbey
Prevention or very early termination is the answer to the situation - mike pence, no there are not enough people willing to take care of disabled babies. We don't have enough people to take older children out of orphanages. 7 billion plus people in the world - wake up. Educate, have available early intervention and stop trying to dominate women's bodies.
