In an interview Tuesday evening, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he supports raising the minimum wage by more than one-third.

The real-estate tycoon, who has frequently deviated from historic Republican orthodoxy on economic matters, said on Fox News Channel that he would increase the federal minimum wage from the current $7.25 per hour to $10.

Mr. Trump said on the “O’Reilly Factor” that he would “raise it somewhat” and that while he’d prefer states to do so themselves, many weren’t doing it.

“You need to help people, and I know it’s not very Republican to say, but you need to help people,” he said. “I would say $10, but with the understanding that somebody like me is going to bring back jobs, I don’t want people to be in that $10 category for very long.”

During the Democratic-primary campaign, Sen. Bernard Sanders called for a $15 federal minimum wage.

Eventual nominee Hillary Clinton came around to that view, though she at first said it should “only” be raised to $12 nationally while adding that she supported efforts by states and cities to make it higher where appropriate to local situations.

California Senate approves another minimum wage hike


$10 an hour in 2016.

I support increasing the minimum wage but I don't think we can jump it from $7.25 to $10 in one motion, it would need to be raised over a period of time. Right now in Northern Virginia, Fairfax County, one of the highest income areas of the country, Panera Bread, a very nice company, and a very good employer is struggling to meet pay increases to $11.00 from $10. So if in this market, a nice company like Panera can't pay $11 even to keep good employees they really want to pay a raise to in order to keep them, imagine what employers are dealing with that aren't big companies like Panera, that aren't in high income high sales areas like Northern Virginia, they're small shops and stores in small rural communities with much lower incomes and lower sales and prices. I'm glad to see Trump support an increase in the minimum wage, but a hop to $10 would be a negotiating number. We do not want businesses and small industries to close or have to lay off workers in the name of helping them.

We need to support higher wages but we need to proceed slowly and carefully on too large of an increase in minimum wage at this time. There is no doubt that in this soft weak drained economy, it will cost jobs not create them and for someone who is earning $7.25, they'd rather have that job than lose it because their employer can't afford the new minimum wage.

Also, there are manufacturers, many in small communities that pay less than $10 an hour, but they provide health insurance, 401K and retirement benefits, paid vacation and sick leave, and often other non-wage benefits that are very important to the employee. We don't want to risk those jobs. These are jobs with upward mobility, over-time, promotions and raises that come with tenure and experience.

All of these things need to be taken into consideration. We want to keep and create jobs not lose them.

Eliminate some of the burdensome regulations and increasing costs of doing business, including licensing, permits, etc. and the thought of pay increases may be more palatable and feasible to many employers.

With the government increasing costs associated with utilities and energy, it is a tremendous burden to small business.

Automation will replace large numbers of workers so business will avoid pay increases. Employers will eliminate jobs.

I think it would be wonderful to offer more pay. It is difficult to live on minimum wage.

Easy to tell employers what to do when you are not the employer and don't know the slim margins that the employer may face each month.

Many minimum wage jobs were considered entry level jobs but have become primary sources of income for those who might have worked in a job no longer available or more difficult to find in America. Manufacturing and other employers have left us so a minimum wage job may be the only opportunity to have an income. Many employers are pressured to offer higher wages for jobs that cannot provide a living for all concerned. Add in benefits and the employer is drowning in costs.

The company said it would pay even its lowest-level workers at least $9 an hour starting this spring, comfortably above the $7.25 federal minimum wage, and push that to $10 in 2016.

The company also said it would strengthen a “department manager” role, giving it a minimum wage of $13 per hour this year and $15 next.

Exactly. There's a procedure we have to follow to raise wages in the United States. Raising minimum at some point on some level is something I support. I thought minimum wages should have been adjusted annually or every 2 years for COLA so they would keep pace with cost of living and occur gradually so employers and pricing could adjust accordingly. That may still be the way to do it. To me that is the best way to do it. When COLA is high it's because inflation is higher and prices and sales are high and good. When COLA is low it's because things aren't going so well, economy in decline or adjustment recession and inflation is lower so prices and and sales are low and not so good. A COLA keeps it relevant to the status of the economy so this may be something Trump should consider as an alternative to a big minimum wage increase.

Back to the total point which is we have to stop this massive immigration flooding the labor supply and depressing wages. This will help push wages up naturally as well as create millions of jobs for Americans who need them. We have to fix our bad trade deals so our producers and providers aren't competing with slave labor in other countries. To draw them back we need a great business environment and wages in line with the economy, they'll come back but lets don't hamper them before they get here. Most of these jobs are the good jobs, manufacturing jobs with lots of benefits, 40 hour plus work weeks, opportunities for advancement and promotions in big companies, lots of reasons we want these jobs back home operating the way they used to here in the US. This will increase employment dramatically and with the stop to illegal immigration and halt or moratorium on all new immigration we'll put Americans back to work at record pace at great wages and benefits naturally in due course through regular business hiring competition. To raise wages, these are the most important steps, much more important than raising the minimum wage beyond the COLA increases which Congress should pass immediately.

Good pay does inspire employees. Being able to screen and hire cheerful employees at minimum wage is also possible. A good work environment where people are kind and respectful is inspiring, too.

Being a small business employer we will increase prices and reduce labor. No jobs if no employer.

Once approved, the U.S. capital will join California and New York in making $15 the hourly minimum.
At least eight cities, including Seattle, have also approved the $15 base.

Donald Trump is not a small business owner. He also employs foreign workers for jobs he says he cannot find workers. He is a billionaire so he could give his thousands of employees a raise with less impact overall.

I appreciate employers who can pay their employees more. Many small business owners work long hours and have little turnover. There is a trade off to wage increases. If minimum wages increased to $10.00 or $15.00, prices must go up to cover it and jobs will be cut.

Small business is greatly impacted by wage increases. Corporations may bear the increases more easily though I am sure it is made up in some way.

It should be considered state by state since cost of living is different by state.

Minimum wage increases are great for people with no real skills. Wages are usually in commensuration with skill sets or education. Naturally they should vary from state to state based upon the cost of living for that particular region. Ultimately forcing smaller businesses to pay up will lead to either higher prices passed on to consumers or more businesses unable to cope with higher labor costs that cannot be passed on to customers threatening their existence.

As more low income people get raises they will have more money to spend at local businesses.
The more money they make the fewer tax paid benefits they will get.
The more money they make the more they will pay in taxes.

Trump advisers mystified over new endorsement of $10/hr federal minimum wage

At one point in the campaign, Donald Trump argued that America had lost its competitive edge in part because wages got too high. In fact, not only did he make that declaration during a November debate, he doubled down the next day on the argument, as Allahpundit noted at the time. Note well that the debate statement came as a direct answer about whether Trump would support raising the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, and Trump insisted he opposed it:


On Tuesday, Trump reversed himself and told Bill O’Reilly that he’d push it to $10 an hour, along with an eyebrow-raising shot at (supposedly) fellow Republicans not wanting to help people out. Yesterday, Trump confirmed that position at a press conference:

The Republican presidential nominee was pressed to provide a specific number by Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly, who said, “there has to be a federal minimum wage.”

Trump initially dismissed that suggestion.

“There doesn’t have to be,” Trump said. “I would leave it and raise it somewhat. You need to help people. I know it’s not very Republican to say.”
“Ten bucks?” O’Reilly asked.

“I would say 10. I would say 10,” Trump agreed. “But with the understanding that somebody like me is going to bring back jobs. I don’t want people to be in that $10 category for very long. But the thing is, Bill, let the states make the deal.”

So … what prompted this change now, and what will Trump propose to effect it? The Hill’s Peter Schroeder reports that even his campaign advisers aren’t really sure:

Trump’s latest position puts him at odds with conservative thinkers and most of the business community, which argues that a government-mandated wage hike would just mean fewer workers as businesses cut costs to meet the new requirement.

Even Trump’s own economic brain trust could not explain how the GOP nominee decided $10 per hour should be the new standard.

“I saw the statement that he made on TV, but I haven’t had the chance to talk to him in the last couple weeks about this,” Stephen Moore, an economist at the Heritage Foundation who is advising the Trump campaign on economic issues, told The Hill on Wednesday.

“I don’t know exactly what he was endorsing. The $10 minimum wage, that was the first I’d heard of that …Sometimes he says one thing, and sometimes he says another about this, so I’m not exactly sure where he’s at on this.”

That’s a handy statement when it comes to Trump’s policy positions. It’s not as if this is some esoteric issue on a low-priority policy area, either. The debate over the minimum wage hits squarely in the center of jobs and the economy, an area where Trump claims expertise as both an investor and an employer. Trump has offered no hint of any development in his thinking on the minimum wage, so it appears to be entirely a reaction to criticism of his previous position by Democrats.

That’s been a hallmark of the Trump campaign all along. At times, it appears that Trump is winging it on policy, trying to pander to whichever constituency has his attention at that moment. Trump has repeatedly shifted positions on a number of issues, leaving supporters to try to square the circle by claiming he’d meant one thing while saying something entirely different. This one will be tough to write off like that, though — Trump clearly opposed a federal minimum-wage hike until he supported it. No wonder his advisers have vertigo.

Raising the minimum wage will not give workers a raise for long. It will force business owners to either raise prices or cut staff to cover the artificially imposed cost increase, and marginal businesses may fail, creating a net loss of jobs and a zero-dollar-per-hour wage for those who fall into the ranks of the unemployed. We have raised the minimum wage dozens of times over the past four decades, and yet the same problems persist. Perhaps the government intervention in wage markets may be the cause of these problems, or at least a contributing factor.
