Donald Trump will visit Britain later this month to open his new golf course in Scotland despite a continuing war of words with the UK's politicians.

The presumptive Republican nominee for the White House will arrive in Britain on June 24, the day after the crunch referendum on EU membership - making it unlikely he will meet David Cameron.

Mr Cameron has refused to apologise for calling Mr Trump 'stupid' last year over a campaign promise by the tycoon to stop Muslims entering America if he wins the White House.

Mr Trump, who has also clashed with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, was the subject of the then biggest ever petition to the Government over the inflammatory comments as more than 500,000 demanded he be banned from Britain.

The Republican politician, who effectively seized his party's nomination earlier this month despite being a rank outsider at the start of the race, has warned he has been offended by British attacks on him and warned of a cool 'special relationship' if he wins in November.

Mr Trump will be officially made his party's nominee at the Republican convention in July and is thought likely to make a further visit to Britain as the candidate later this summer.

Arriving as the results of the EU referendum are declared is likely to add a political twist to Mr Trump's ribbon cutting.

He has repeatedly suggested he would back Brexit were he to have a vote on June 23 - and took a sharply different position to Barack Obama on the referendum when he insisted Britain after Brexit would not be 'at the back of the queue' for a trade deal with the US.

Trump Turnberry's Ailsa golf course, which has played host to The Open Championship four times, reopened today following a £200 million restoration.

Announcing his plans to travel, Mr Trump said: 'Very exciting that one of the great resorts of the world, Turnberry, will be opening today after a massive £200 million investment.

'I own it and I am very proud of it. I look forward to attending the official opening of this great development on June 24.'

The property was bought by Mr Trump in 2014 and is the second Scottish golf resort he has launched following the opening of Trump International Golf Links, Scotland, in Aberdeenshire in 2012.

The main Turnberry hotel building, which has been under construction since September last year, has been updated with the remodelling of all 103 guest rooms, bars and restaurants.

The Turnberry Lighthouse has been fully restored and converted into a £3,500 per night, two-bedroom presidential suite.

The property developer, whose mother Mary MacLeod was born on Stornoway, has always maintained Scotland was his first choice for a golf resort due to his family ties and the recognition of the country as the home of golf.

Mr Cameron continued moves to build bridges with Mr Trump at last week's G7 summit where he insisted the special relationship would continue regardless of who held the most senior offices.

The PM said: 'I would congratulate anybody who can get through those marathon processes for leading one of the two great political parties in the United States of America.

'It is an extraordinary marathon. I'm not going to get involved at all in the American election – it's a matter for the American people to choose their next President.

'But I believe in the special relationship. I believe the special relationship will work whoever is in whichever jobs in the UK or in the US – it's a shared interest about values and about security and prosperity in our world.'

On the prospect of a Trump visit, Mr Cameron added: 'Sometimes these candidates choose to come through various European countries in the run-up to US elections. I don't know whether this will happen this time. No dates are fixed.

'But I'm always happy to meet people on that basis and I've met other candidates before.'

The row between the PM and Trump began last year after the Republican candidate called for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S and claimed police in London 'fear for their lives' because some communities are so radicalised.

It followed a deadly mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, where 14 people were killed by two suspected ISIS sympathisers.

Cameron then hit out at the presidential hopeful calling him stupid and saying his plans were 'divisive.'

Speaking at the time in Parliament, Cameron said he was 'proud of representing a country which I think has some claim to say we are one of the most successful multi-racial multi-faith multi-ethnic countries anywhere in the world.'

He added: ''There's more to do to build opportunity and fight discrimination.

'It is right that we exclude people that are going to radicalise or encourage extremism.'

But he said he disagreed with those saying Mr Trump should be barred from the UK: 'I think his remarks are divisive, stupid and wrong.

Of course he will have Donald Trump here we see he is not fighting for money interests he's fighting to make a great america again he is not some kind of scounger who has never made $1 in life unless by talking about socialism and making propaganda to come in government power
