Nearly 50 immigrants detained by authorities in Sylmar motel
    Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Authorities quarantined 45 people suspected of being illegal immigrants after one of them appeared to show symptoms of chicken pox, officials said Sunday.

The individuals, including three minors and six women, hailed from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They were discovered Saturday afternoon at a Motel 6 in Los Angeles' northern Sylmar neighborhood when employees of the motel noticed a large number of people cramped into several rooms, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lori Haley said.

Haley said the entire group would be quarantined for eight days. Their immigration status was under investigation.

"It appears they are undocumented," Haley said, but she said during the quarantine, interviews with the migrants would be on hold.

Motel 6 officials said employees entered the rooms after several days because they were concerned about possible health or fire code violations.

"The rooms were purchased by adults with proper identification. However, housekeeping services were denied entrance for a couple of days," said Motel 6 spokeswoman Kelley Johnson. "It's our policy to provide housekeeping services a minimum of every other day."

When the motel employees entered the rooms, they found the fearful migrants and decided to call the police, she said.

They should be thankful at least it wasn't tuberculosis. But speaking as someone who had chicken pox it ain't no picnic. I caught it when I was 28 years old from one of my parents that had a shingles outbreak. I still vividly remember the painful itchy sores.
