Elvira Arellano tells illegals to lobby Congress for Amnesty
From: "Wrevcoleman@aol.com" <Wrevcoleman@aol.com>
Heroes of the Latino Community
By Elvira Arellano
I offer my congratulations to all those Latinos in the United States who could vote and did vote. You put political power behind the moral demand for immigration reform. For all those who suffer in the shadows and for all of us who are separated from our families and our children in the United States, you are our heroes !
We know that what happens right after an election is as important as what happens on election day. In the weeks that follow an election the supporters of winning candidates move quickly to cash in on campaign promises. The Latino community must not be left behind.
In Chicago, Congressman Gutierrez is working with Familia Latina Unida and amny other organizations and churches to organize a mass hearing for U.S. citizens who have a family member who is undocumented and therefore under threat of deportation. – or one that has already been deported. The hearing will take place this Saturday. The Congressman has said he wilol collect the details of thousands of families and present them to President elect Obama the following Tuesday.
It would be my hope that every member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as well as other congressmen of conscience would do the same thing in the weeks to come. We need to put a human face, in fact millions of human faces, on the separation of families and take it forcefully to our representatives in Congress. We must show that the 12 million undocumented are part of Latino families and part of the Latino community.
Congressman Gutierrez’s approach, which follows on the long hard work of Familia Latina Unida on behalf of mixed status families, offers the U.S. citizens who so wonderfully turned out to vote the chance to make their presence felt now in the crucial weeks before the new congress and the new administration comes into office. It gives them a chance to fight for their family members, for their church members and for their community.
But my heroes, please don’t wait for your congressman to act! Write, call or email your congressperson today and tell them your story. Tell them you are a U.S. citizen and you are being denied your right to keep your family together. Ask them to act now to demand an immediate moratorium on raids, deportations and separation of families and to act quickly, in the first 100 days, to pass immigration reform.
Those of you who are U.S. citizens can end the suffering and the pain and reunite families as God intended them to be. If you are not already a member of Familia Latina Unida join today so that you can stay informed in this struggle. You can find them at www.familialatinaunida.com.
