Ann Coulter: I advised Trump against nepotism after Steve Bannon refused

by Eddie Scarry | Jan 3, 2018, 1:25 PM Share on Twitter Share on Facebook

Conservative author Ann Coulter confirmed Wednesday that she advised President Trump against hiring his family members for any key positions in the White House, after failing to get any of his closer associates to do it.

New York magazine on Wednesday published an excerpt from a new book on the White House by Michael Wolff, which includes an anecdote during Trump's presidential transition period when he considered hiring his son in law Jared Kushner as his chief of staff.

"Nobody is apparently telling you this," Coulter told Trump, according to the book. “But you can’t. You just can’t hire your children.”

Coulter corroborated the detail in an email to the Washington Examiner, saying that she only told Trump directly after she was unsuccessful in getting campaign chairman Steve Bannon, billionaire entrepreneur Peter Thiel, and now-White House policy adviser Stephen Miller to do it.

"I tried to get Bannon, Miller or Thiel to tell Trump, but they all said, 'above my pay grade,'" she said. "So I told him. I said only Third Worlders become leader of a country and immediately hire their relatives and he’d look like Evita Perón."

Coulter's commentary against mass immigration is believed to have been a big influence in Trump's campaign.

Trump eventually settled on then-Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to serve as his first chief of staff. He did, however, hire Kushner and his daughter Ivanka to work as advisers in the White House.

Ann Coulter urged Trump not to hire Jared Kushner as chief of staff: report

Conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter reportedly pressured President Trump not to hire his son-in-law Jared Kushner as his chief of staff, New York Magazine says.

“Nobody is apparently telling you this,” Coulter reportedly told Trump during the presidential transition as he was assembling his White House staff. “But you can’t. You just can’t hire your children.”

Kushner, who is now an unpaid senior adviser to the president along with his wife Ivanka Trump, was one of Trump's early considerations for the job. The campaign marked the first foray into politics for Kushner, who previously worked as a real-estate investor and publisher of the New York Observer.

The president eventually chose former Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebusas his chief of staff, who served in the White House until his firing in July, only six months into Trump's term. Priebus was replaced by John Kelly, who had served as secretary of Homeland Security.

Coulter, the author of "In Trump We Trust," was an early supporter of Trump. She has sometimes criticized the president, however, especially for what she says has been his failure to meet his campaign promises so far on immigration.

Excellent advice from Ann. Too bad Trump was to stubborn to listen ....... could have saved us and him some headaches.

Ann Coulter is a godsend! She is so very brave and absolutely correct. Trump's nepotism in the White House is a great failure on his part and possibly a sign more huge disappointments to come.

Ann's a lawyer and should know that it's not nepotism when they aren't paid. Neither Jared nor Ivanka are paid anything for the work they do in the White House. They're volunteers. I still think they should go back to New York and work their businesses because I don't think their businesses do as well when they're in DC doing volunteer work for the White House.

What makes you think nepotism isn't possible in volunteer work?

The definition of the word in our language. It's giving relatives jobs for money. Anyone can volunteer to help anyone for free, that's not "nepotism". It's when you give jobs that pay money to relatives. It's why we don't pay First Ladies who work their asses off a salary.

I disagree. There are actual situations in volunteer work where nepotism exist.
