“Normal people” in Alabama are supporting populist conservative Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore over the issue of immigration, as they oppose the pro-amnesty, open borders positions held by Democrat opponent Doug Jones, according to a Republican operative in the state.

The unnamed GOP operative, who is not a major proponent of Moore’s candidacy, told the Daily Beast that Jones’ pro-immigration positions—which are deeply out-of-line with former Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions’ seamless record of opposing mass immigration and foreign worker programs—have driven voters to Moore.

The Daily Beast piece notes:

“Moore has got a real base of 30 percent of people who would vote for him no matter what,” the Republican said. “He has never been able to win a regular election—he always wins in off years and always in low turnout elections. The normal people I talk to will vote for Moore just because you don’t want a Doug Jones voting on judges and immigration.”
The Republican predicts a Moore victory but said he wouldn’t be surprised if Jones won,“because people are just disgusted,” though he predicts that whoever wins won’t last long in office, anyway. Moore, he said, would likely lose in a primary during the higher turnout 2020 race. “And he’ll do something stupid.” [Emphasis added]

Like Sessions, Moore opposes amnesty for illegal aliens, supports a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, supports legislation to cut legal immigration in half, and supports ending birthright citizenship.

Jones, on the other hand, has taken immigration positions that have put him in tune with the open borders lobby and corporate interests, all of which advocate for more immigration and more imported foreign workers while opposing President Trump’s planned border wall.

Most recently, as Breitbart News reported, Moore slammed Jones’ silence on sanctuary cities, which are local jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials, thus giving safe haven to criminal illegal aliens.

Moore said in a statement:

My opponent supports amnesty and has stated that he sees no need for a border wall and has said nothing about sanctuary cities. His election would be a threat to the safety and well-being of the people of Alabama and the United States at large.

When previously asked about sanctuary cities, Jones deflected the question.

“I’ll let someone else talk about sanctuary cities in California,” Jones told the Montgomery Advertiser in July.

Despite its popularity among Alabama voters, Jones has increasingly been a vocal opponent of Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border that would serve as the first path to ending illegal immigration in the country.

As Breitbart News reported, Jones said of the wall:

“No, I do not. I think it’s too expensive,” Jones told Fox News when asked if he supported the construction of the border wall.
“I don’t think we need to be spending $20 billion dollars,” Jones continued, blasting the border wall. “I want to put it on healthcare, I want to get tax cuts for the middle class.”
