Daily News mocks White House on immigration: 'Grab Them By Their Liberty'

The New York Daily News is mocking the White House over senior adviser Stephen Miller’s comments during Wednesday's press briefing, at which Miller debated immigration policies and got into a heated exchange over the writing on the base of the Statue of Liberty.

“Grab Them By Their Liberty,” reads the banner headline of the New York tabloid, referencing President Trump’s infamous comments about women that came out during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“Trump declares war on legal immigration as White House big disses symbol of hope,” a secondary headline reads.

Trump unveiled a plan earlier Wednesday that would restrict the level of legal immigration into the U.S. and impose new requirements to bring in more “skilled” immigrants.

Miller had a tense exchange with CNN’s Jim Acosta during the press briefing Wednesday over the immigration proposal, in which Miller suggested the poem welcoming immigrants at the base of the statue wasn’t very important because it was added after the statue was installed.

"I can honestly say: I am shocked at your statement that you think only people from Great Britain and Australia would know English. It reveals your cosmopolitan bias to a shocking degree — this is an amazing moment," he said, speaking over Acosta at the briefing.

Why would a journalist make a statement suggesting only Australians and British speak English?

Surely he knows better - or does he?

Or is this just some more elitist rhetoric, thinking the American people are stupid sheeple and will believe whatever they say?

Someone need to ask where did the idea come from that we must take in any immigrants? We no longer have any 'unsettled territory' for them to conquer - we have all the people we can handle.

No one - no one has a right to come to this country. We need to disabuse these screeching people of that idea. It is a privilege and honor we bestow on people and there is nothing wrong with thinking they should be worthy of that.

We took the ferry around the Statue of Liberty, when we were visiting our daughter there. I just wanted to see it, not thinking it would really affect me. It was after dark and as the ferry approached it, I got a "huge lump in my throat that squeezed the tears out of my eyes."

My first thought was of the military returning from war and how they must have felt upon seeing it.

Acosta is of Cuban origin and apparently hasn't been here long enough at least through his heritage to know who speaks English throughout the world. His father came here right before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Wiki doesn't say when his mother came, or when he came or where he was born in 1971.
