Black Lives pair meets with Hillary Clinton in Cleveland

    By Darrel Rowland
The Columbus Dispatch • Friday October 21, 2016 9:29 PM

CLEVELAND — Hillary Clinton's appeal to African-American voters in areas such as Cleveland could prove key to bringing home the election nationally.

Here's how Armond Budish, Cuyahoga County executive, explained it to 1,600 assembled for Clinton's appearance Friday at Cuyahoga Community College.

"There's no question Hillary Clinton wins Cuyahoga County," Budish said. "Our job is to make sure she wins by enough to win Ohio. And if she wins Ohio, she wins the presidency."

While Clinton's half-hour speech was warmly received, a meeting beforehand may have proven just as vital to her attempt to win the vote in Ohio's largest concentration of African-Americans.

It certainly represented the biggest flashpoint to the Trump campaign.

The controversy stemmed from a private get-together Clinton held with two members of the Movement for Black Lives, associated with Black Lives Matter.

The Clinton campaign characterized the session with activists Brittany Packnett and DeRay Mckesson as a continuation of "the discussion of how they can advance equity and opportunity in the African-American community." She met with the two about a year ago, too.

Packnett, 31, who achieved national prominence after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, endorsed Clinton on Friday after initial misgivings, Elle magazine reported.

"I have heard so many young people, especially young people of color, express a great deal of frustration about this particular election," Packnett told the magazine.

"I have been wrestling with the same frustrations, but I have a responsibility to young people, to my community and to our work. If our work is progress, then I must use the platform I have to ensure the work has the best possibility to advance. This is not about me. This is about the work. The best way I can use my platform is to support Secretary Clinton."

The campaign for Trump continued to push the narrative that Clinton is showing far more support for the Black Lives Matter movement than for law enforcement officers.

"Hillary Clinton shows where her priorities lie when she meets with radicals from Black Lives Matters but refuses requests to meet with our local police officers here in Cleveland, Ohio, and across the nation," said Steve Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, in a statement released by the Trump campaign. "By accepting this meeting with this racially exclusive and divisive group that has incited attacks against police officers, she sets back our efforts to restore trust with the law-abiding citizens we serve in the neighborhoods where our presence is needed the most."

Sgt. Demetrick Pennie, president of the Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation, said, "Hillary Clinton disrespects the sacrifice of law enforcement officers across America by meeting with a group like Black Lives Matter, which has advocated for violence against police officers. Hillary Clinton's affirmation of this group just weeks before the election reflects the worst kind of pandering by politicians in this country who will stoke racial tensions to promote their political agenda."

Last week, an organization representing black Cleveland police officers asked the union to rescind its endorsement of Trump, the first endorsement in its history, saying it exacerbated racial problems.

During her speech, Clinton challenged Trump's refusal to say he'll accept the outcome of the Nov. 8 election.

Such action "is threatening our democracy," Clinton said.

"We know in our country the difference between leadership and dictatorship," she said in the college's recreation center. "And the peaceful transition of power is one of the things that sets us apart."

Clinton, in an appearance sandwiched between Trump events Thursday in Delaware County and today at the I-X Center in Cleveland, did not make every reference to her opponent quite as pointed.

Referring to their trio of 90-minute debates, she remarked, "I have now spent 4˝ hours on stage with Donald, proving I have the stamina to be president."

But she ripped Trump for his treatment of women.

“We’ve got to make sure that women and girls are treated with dignity and respect in our country,” Clinton said.

"We cannot tolerate the kind of behavior and language we see from my opponent. He thinks that belittling women makes him bigger."

As she takes a commanding lead in polls nationally and in most battleground states — although Ohio is deadlocked — Clinton said, "I really believe our country is at a turning point."

The former secretary of state openly appealed to voters reconsidering their support for Trump.

"I know you may still have questions for me," she said. "I respect that. I want to answer them. I want to earn your vote.

"I am reaching out to all Americans: Democrats, Republicans, independents.”

Hillary Clinton Tries to Cut into Donald Trump’s Deep Support Base in Ohio

    by NEIL W. MCCABE
    21 Oct 2016
    Washington

The Democratic nominee for president rallied with supporters and reached out to her GOP rival Donald J. Trump’s voters Friday at Cuyahoga Community College, just outside of Cleveland.

“I want to say something to people, who may be reconsidering their support for my opponent,” said Hillary R. Clinton, who wore a dark green pant suit as she walked around a catwalk-like stage carrying a wireless microphone and referring from time-to-time to printed notes at the podium.

“I know you may still have questions for me,” she said. “I respect that. I want to answer them. I want to earn your vote. I am reaching out to all Americans, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. I think America needs every single one of us to bring our energy, our talents, our ambition to build that better country.”

The one-time senator from New York told her supporters that they need to find their friends and co-workers who are still supporting Trump and ask them to vote for her.” I want you to tell them that I want to be your president. I want to be every single American’s president.”

Americans can disagree without being disagreeable, she said. “I know that. I have seen that happen. I want to be a good listener.”

Ohio is full of people who are frustrated and angry, she said. “But, anger is not a plan.”

Clinton said there were only 18 days left in the campaign and she is asking Americans to think seriously about what they really want. “Not just in your next president, but in your lives, in your jobs, your education, in our future together.

The former first lady was in great humor throughout the rally, pointing out signs in the crowd and making light of herself and her opponent.

At one point, she asked if anyone had seen Wednesday night’s presidential debate. As the crowd roared with approval, she looked out and milked the applause like an accomplished performer. Then, as the cheers died down she said it was the last time she would ever have to debate Trump.

The crowd roared up again, and then she told them that after four-and-a-half hours on the same stage as Trump, “I proved I have the stamina to be president.” #boom.

Ohio has been a strong state for Trump; one poll taken after Columbus Day showed the New York City billionaire with 50 percent of the electorate against Clinton’s 39 percent. But other polls show a much closer race.

No Republican has won the White House without Ohio. In fact, there have been eight presidents from Ohio, all Republicans.

In the 2012 presidential campaign, President Barack Obama beat his Republican opponent W. Mitt Romney with 51 percent of the vote to Romney’s 48 percent. Those results were nearly identical to the national popular vote that had the president garner 51 percent of the vote to 47 percent for the former Massachusetts governor.

Hillary thinks that if can claim she won the debate, that she won the election. Big Mistake. She didn't win either one. I believe it's over for her. There is no Trump Supporter reconsidering their support, they are doing the opposite, they are working to change the hearts and minds of Hillary Supporters by showing them she's a crook, a liar, an evil Globalist and selling our country out to the highest bidder, which is why she supports open borders, Syrian Refugees and TPP. Hillary is an evil person, a mindless, stupid, incompetent, air-head with no heart, no soul and no correct plan to fix our country. She is not the solution, she is the problem.

She is the evil that must be rooted out of our country, starting with our government. This is not someone who should even be on the ballot, let alone leading in the rigged polls and poised by the CORRUPT MEDIA, to be the next President of the United States, which means poised to dissolve our borders, trade protections, treasury, sovereignty and merge US into a One World Government ruled by a Global Oligarchy of Evil Globalists.
