Falwell, Graham Side with Trump after Pope Blasts Border Wall

Donald Trump is easing up on his war of words with Pope Francis, but several religious leaders are joining in the dispute, taking Trump's side.

After his visit to Mexico Thursday, the pope was asked about Trump's plans to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

The pontiff is quoted to have responded, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian."

But Francis did say he was willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt. Still, Trump wasted no time responding.

"He actually said that maybe I'm not a good Christian or something. It's unbelievable," Trump said.

"For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful. They're using the pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves -- that's the Mexican government," he continued.

But Trump later said he believes the pope's response may have been misinterpreted.

Still, evangelical leaders have been weighing in on Trump's side. Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. and Franklin Graham disagree with the pope's comments about a border wall.

Falwell told CNN he thinks the pope is mistaken, and that John F. Kennedy would "roll over in his grave" over the pope's comments that Trump is "not Christian" just because he wants to build a border wall.

Graham said, "I agree that as Christians we should try to build bridges with everyone that we possibly can, but that doesn't mean that we should compromise our national security."

He pointed out Trump isn't the only candidate in support of border security and had this advice for the pontiff: "Reach out and build a bridge to Donald Trump. Who knows where he may be this time next year!"
