Another Federal taxpayer dollar waste. This town is no more than an illegal alien community that continues to have anchor babies faster than rabbits. I am just wondering where they are going to get the workers from, the whole community only has 33% with a HS degree. A good bet is that the money will never make it to it's intended purpose. Towns like these run by corrupt local officials.

Parlier City Manager Lou Martinez said Friday a federal $2.6 million grant for development of a business park will be a major boost to the city, bringing an additional 125 jobs.

Money from the grant will be used to finish the second half of an 80-acre development on the Parlier Bio-Agricultural and Light Manufacturing Park. It will pay for water and sewer lines that must be in place before tenants can move in.

"This is very big for Parlier, which has historically been a farmworker community," Martinez said. "That's seasonal work, and these will be permanent jobs."

Parlier has been designated a "renewal community" and State Enterprise Zone in part because of its high jobless rate of more than 20% compared with a national rate of about 5%. Because of those designations, businesses establishing operations there can get federal and state tax benefits as well as credits.

At least three companies already situated on 40 acres of the park have provided 200 jobs, Martinez said.

One of them, Custom Produce, specializing in cold storage, brought 135 jobs.

Others up and running include Plemons Machinery, which makes machinery for fabricating cardboard boxes, and Custom Wood Products, which makes pallets and wooden box containers.

The grant from the Economic Development Administration is expected to generate $13.5 million in private investment. The federal agency is a venture capital resource to encourage economic development in distressed communities.

"Several biotechnology businesses want to locate there and have already written letters of commitment," Martinez said. "They would use farm products to make textiles and fuels."

The 80-acre development is the first phase on a 297-acre site at the southwest corner of Mendocino and Manning avenues.
