The FBI raided the offices of Rep. Duncan Hunter's former campaign treasurer in February as part of a Justice Department criminal investigation into the California congressman.
George Washington University researcher Seamus Hughes first disclosed on Wednesday the existence of a search warrant that detailed the Feb. 23 raid of Election CFO, an Alexandria, Va.-based company that handled the California Republican's campaign finances.
In the raid, federal law enforcement officials seized computers, tablets, iPads, bills and disbursement records, and a computer hard drive.
The search-and-seizure warrant was filed with the Eastern District of Virginia and signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Nachmanoff.
Hunter, a five-term congressman, faces allegations that he spent thousands of dollars in campaign funds on personal expenses, including family trips to Hawaii and Italy, private school tuition, groceries, and dental services.
He is a former Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, and was reportedly considered for national security posts in the Trump administration.
