Former NFL Pro Explains Why He’s a Republican: Democrats Are Destroying Black Communities

Garry Cobb played football for USC and then for 11 years with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is now running for New Jersey’s 1st District seat as a Republican, and his explanation of why he is no longer a Democrat is very compelling.

Explaining that he kind of discovered that he was Republican due to his upbringing, he said that the massively negative effects of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty had the most impact:

This was an incentive for the man to leave the home and it’s destroyed African-American families throughout the country.

I didn’t realize it but as I started thinking about it and growing up, because as a kid going to college, you know I was all into the Democratic Party and everything; then I started realizing they helped destroy our communities and we’re supposed to be celebrating electing these people.

One of the towns in our areas, Camden, is still suffering. I want to put an end to this.

He goes on to explain further how the Democratic party and its policies have impacted youth, the economy, and more. He has some not-so-complimentary things to say about the President as well.

It’s refreshing to see a man in a position like Cobb’s so clearly explain why liberal economic and social policies are not as compassionate as many are led to believe…

THE ISSUES

Securing Our Borders and Upholding the Rule of Law

America is the greatest nation on earth: founded by a creed that all men are created equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. We are a nation of laws, and everyone must follow the rule of law. The first step in immigration reform is to secure the border, enforce existing laws, and reform our legal immigration system. Immigration reform must take a common-sense approach that focuses on a long-term solution that is clear, concise, and enforceable.

National Security
Our nation faces enemies that threaten our safety and security. Since September 11th, we are continuously reminded that the world today is a dangerous place.
And yet recently, misguided foreign policy moves are being made, especially in the Middle East. Isolating our allies and negotiating with our enemies is never a strong position. Our military must be equipped to respond to the changing threats to our national security and have the resources needed to protect our freedoms.

Enhancing Competitiveness and Promoting Opportunity
We need to create a business-friendly environment that encourages job growth and creates opportunity for all. This means providing a platform where American businesses can compete in the global marketplace. To achieve this, we must keep taxes low and eliminate unnecessary (and often duplicative) regulatory red tape.
China and India are the fastest growing economies in the world today. Our nation must implement policies that allows our entrepreneurs to succeed, our prosperity to expand, and our economy to continue to lead the world.

Taxes
Some in Congress insist on constantly raising taxes on American families and businesses so that more money can be spent on wasteful Washington programs and a bigger federal government. The private sector, not Washington, drives our economy and provides opportunity for American families. Taxes must be kept low so our small businesses can invest and create jobs here in America.
American taxpayers needs to keep more of their hard-earned money. Only by reforming the complicated and burdensome tax code into something that is fairer, flatter, and easier to understand can we unleash the power of the American entrepreneur.

Get our Health Care System Under Control
As health care costs rise, we need to continue to look for creative ideas that rely on the marketplace to improve the quality of our health care system and empower individuals in their health care decisions. Portability of plans and allowing health care insurance companies to compete across state lines is a start.

Get the IRS Under Control
For many years, common sense Americans have warned us about the bloated bureaucracy that is the IRS. We never should have vested so much power in an unelected organization. Recent revelations show that the IRS targets political opponents at will; which cannot stand.
It’s time to get the IRS under control. As your Representative for the 1st Congressional District of New Jersey, Garry Cobb will support necessary reforms; starting with legislation making it a felony to target individual taxpayers with politically motivated tax audits.

Get the VA Under Control
We need to keep our commitment to our veterans: that we will care for them when they get home. The recent reports of gross mismanagement by the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that Washington has not kept that commitment. With the surge of new patients entering the VA system, the VA needs resources to provide our veterans with superior services when they return from deployment.
Though the Administration and Congress have taken steps to reduce waiting times, and fired some of the senior administrators that contributed to the VA’s serious mismanagement, a complete overhaul of the VA system must be conducted immediately. Our veterans deserve no less.

Education
Our schools are failing us and Washington’s only solution to the problem is to increase spending and impose more regulations on our schools. Instead of throwing money at the problem, we need to return to state and local school systems the flexibility in how they can use their federal dollars.
We need to scale back the Department of Education and give more control to our state and local school systems through the reformation and reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), formerly known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Additionally, we need to support school choice and give parents more control of their child’s education needs, whether it is charter schools, online education, or homeschooling.
Ultimately, our students need to be able to compete in the global economy, which means giving state and local school systems the resources and flexibility they need to provide a superior education. By reducing unnecessary oversight of the Department of Education, we can free our local schools from the expensive Federal bureaucracy.

Holding Government Accountable
Garry supports a smaller, less intrusive government that defends capitalism and private property rights, and provides for the common defense. However, Washington has only expanded the reach of the government and imposed more red tape and regulations on its citizens. We must eliminate this bureaucracy of wasteful spending that only erodes the public’s trust in government.
