Fla. governor demands Jesse Jackson apologize for divisive insults

Gov. Rick Scott has had enough. He called on the Rev. Jesse Jackson to apologize to Floridians for describing The Sunshine State as “the Selma of our time” during Jackson’s Tuesday visit with the Dream Defenders protesting at the state Capitol.

“Jesse Jackson owes every Floridian an apology for his reckless and divisive comments,” Scott said in a statement. “It is unfortunate that he would come to Florida to insult Floridians and divide our state at a time when we are striving for unity and healing. Floridians are a strong, resilient people. We are fortunate to live in a great state where all Floridians enjoy opportunities to get a great job and a world-class education.”

The Dream Defenders have occupied the Capitol building for two weeks, demanding a special session to repeal Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law. But the governor has said it’s not going to happen.

In the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the Travyon Martin case and liberal backlash against the Stand Your Ground law, Jackson referred to Florida as an “apartheid state” and called for its boycott.

“No doubt, the inclination is to boycott Florida, to stop conventions, to isolate Florida as a kind of apartheid state given this whole Stand Your Ground law,” Jackson said during a CNN interview. “Homicides against blacks have tripled since this law has been in existence.”
