” WASHINGTON — Congressman Curt Clawson wants a Floridian and an “outsider” candidate not promoted from within the existing Republican leadership to be the next Speaker of the House and said Friday has split with his Freedom Caucus on backing Rep. Paul Ryan.”

As I understand the “Freedom Caucus” rules, it votes as ablock and needs 80% approval when voting. If this is true, the Ryan deal is not a done deal as we are led to believe by our corporatist controlled media.

WASHINGTON — Congressman Curt Clawson wants a Floridian and an “outsider” candidate not promoted from within the existing Republican leadership to be the next Speaker of the House and said Friday has split with his Freedom Caucus on backing Rep. Paul Ryan.

The Bonita Springs Republican said he expects to support U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Orlando, if Webster remains a candidate, but he said delicate negotiations with House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Ryan, of Wisconsin, over House procedures are ongoing and “there are several variables at play to be decided in the next several days.”

Ryan wants conservatives to withdraw a pending motion to vacate the speakership that prompted the current speaker, John Boehner, to announce his retirement last month. The speaker vote has been scheduled for next Wednesday.

More than 50 percent of the roughly 40-member Freedom Caucus agreed they didn’t want to put forward a member of the caucus and agreed to back Ryan if they can “horse trade” and get him to agree to certain procedural changes that end a top-down leadership style the caucus condemns, he said.

“I did not vote with the group on that,” he said. “But I respect the caucus and I’m a team player.”

“When I say I’d like an outsider, what that means is I want someone we can credibly say to our constituents is going to change how things are done and is not business as usual,” he said.

Boehner announced last month that he is stepping down next week. The House GOP conference has been in chaos since his hand-picked successor, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, decided not to seek the speakership. Ryan has become the consensus candidate but has said he needed the support of the Freedom Caucus before declaring his formal candidacy.

Clawson said as recently as last week, speaking with the Lee County Republican Executive Committee, he heard loud and clear they want to end business as usual in Washington.

Of the three criteria he will base his vote for speaker on next Wednesday, he said, “with respect to Webster, we get at least two out of those three: he’s Floridian; he’s not promotion from within; and you can decide for yourself about the outsider thing.”

Webster rose through the ranks of the Florida House of Representatives to become speaker in Tallahassee.

Asked if the remaining members of the Freedom Caucus not supporting Ryan can deprive Ryan of the 218 votes he needs to become speaker, Clawson said the caucus has a “blocking position” but said “too much is in play between here (Friday) and ” Wednesday to say what will happen.

But he plans to stick with Webster.

“I anticipate that, if Webster stays in the game, my full expectation is to support Webster,” he said.

One of NC Congressmen Rep. Walter Jones will also be voting for Webster. Heard him on the radio yesterday.

Why the Speakership Matters


As you may or may not have heard, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) N/A% announced that he would resign as Speaker of the House at the end of October and it was speculated thatRep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) 60% was favored to take over the position. However, McCarthy announced that he was not going to seek the position, throwing the mainstream media into a frenzy of speculation and rumor mongering. Why the media frenzy? Does it really matter who the Speaker is? Yes it does. One of the reasons it matters is because the Speaker of the House of Representatives is 2ndin line to the Presidency. If, for any reason, the President and Vice President are unable to “discharge the powers and duties of the office”, the Speaker becomes President and even though this has never happened in the history of the United States, it COULD, therefore it matters. But there is actually a much more compelling reason why it matters.
The Speaker of the House is one of the most powerful positions in our government.

The Speaker can make sure that his/her party members get all the plush committee positions, greatly increasing their influence and effectiveness and ensure that the opposing party is essentially assigned to ‘Siberia’ greatly reducing their influence and effectiveness. A member of the House who wants to speak on an issue must first be recognized by the Speaker and the Speaker is under no obligation to recognize any member which gives him/her immense power over the flow of a debate.
If the Speaker and the President are of the same party, the President’s agenda generally advances. If the Speaker and the President are of opposing parties, the President’s agenda generally stalls.
The Speaker of the House is the most powerful legislative person in government, and legislation is the most powerful tool for controlling the citizenry.
So it matters. It matters a lot.
