Learned it in school , (when schools taught real stuff)
Please tell the story behind it.
It comes from the old coal mining days when workers got paid peanuts

Actually they didn't really get paid , The mining companies owned the general stores , workers drew items "on credit" against their "paychecks"

Usually items were marked up sky high , when the workers went to draw their checks , the whole thing would go to the "company store" , and the balanced tacked on to the next paycheck

So goes the line in the song
"St Peter don't you call me cause I can't go , I owe my soul to the
    company store"

Oh, and the usual quota for a grown miner in those days was 16 tons a day
    All with pick and shovel

Iron Maiden "killers" was a fantastic LP

I think I've always been more of a fan of Paul Di'anno

I started singing this song on a tour bus in Reno once and the beautiful older women on the bus made me sing the whole song! And started clapping!
What makes this country "The Greatest Country in the World!" is we love to make you laugh and sing! "Take that away and your life will SUCK!"
