(CNN) -- George Zimmerman was taken into custody Monday after a domestic altercation in Lake Mary, Florida, police said.

"As of right now, he has been placed in investigative detention," Lake Mary police spokesman Zach Hudson said.

Hudson said there were three parties involved in the altercation.

The incident comes two months after Zimmerman, a volunteer neighborhood watch captain, was found not guilty of murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford.

Zimmerman in custody after domestic incident

    By Kimberly Schupp-Miller - email

LAKE MARY, FL (RNN) - George Zimmerman has been taken into custody after a domestic incident on Monday.

CNN reports a gun was present at the scene, but was not involved in the incident.

However, the Associated Press and other media outlets are saying his wife said he threatened her with a gun.

Police said Zimmerman's wife Shellie called 911.

The house reportedly belongs to Shellie's parents.

Police told CNN the altercation involved Zimmerman, his father-in-law and his wife.

The public information officer for Lake Mary, FL, told CNN all three were taken into custody and are currently in investigative detention.

Police told the Orlando Sentinel they are investigating this a "possible domestic battery" situation.

Zimmerman hasn't been arrested. Police said they are working on figuring out what happened.

No other details are immediately available.

His wife filed for divorce last week.

George Zimmerman has been pulled over twice for speeding – received a ticket once - since being acquitted for the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin back in July.

George Zimmerman questioned and released after incident involving estranged wife

    Published September 09, 2013FoxNews.com

    • Sept. 9, 2013: Police outside the home of Shellie Zimmerman in Lake Mary, Fla. (FOX NEWS)

George Zimmerman's estranged wife called police to her home Monday, saying the former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin threatened her with a gun.

However, Shellie Zimmerman, who filed for divorce last week, later declined to press charges. Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell told the Associated Press that she had changed her story and never saw a firearm.

Earlier, Zimmerman was held in investigative detention, Lake Mary Deputy Chief Colin Morgan told Fox News. A police spokesman told the Associated Press that Zimmerman was released from investigative detention at around 6:30 p.m. local time and "just walked back into the house."

Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman's trial attorney, said the couple was in the process of splitting up their personal property at their home, which was owned by Shellie Zimmerman's father.

He said his former client was surprised when his estranged wife and her father returned to the house Monday to take more things.

"There was an argument with Shellie's dad over what does and doesn't go," O'Mara said. "Things got a little bit hot."

Bracknell said Shellie Zimmerman called police shortly after 2 p.m. On the 911 call, Shellie Zimmerman is sobbing and repeating "Oh my God" as she talks to a police dispatcher. She yells at her father to get inside the house, saying Zimmerman may start shooting at them.

"He's threatening all of us with a firearm ... He punched my dad in the nose," Shellie Zimmerman said on the call. "I don't know what he's capable of. I'm really scared."

She also said he grabbed an iPad from her hand and smashed it.

Morgan said there were allegations that Zimmerman came to the home and Shellie's father was the aggressor in the incident. Police say Shellie told them that Zimmerman had his hand on his gun and became aggressive, then punched her father. O' Mara said Zimmerman never threatened his estranged wife and never punched her father.

Police officials later said both Shellie Zimmerman and her father signed statements of non-prosecution. However, prosecutors could still build a case based on surveillance video from cameras outside the house and also video from the squad cars of officers who responded. Florida law allows police officers to arrest someone for domestic violence without the consent of the victim.

"Right now, he's not a suspect in anything per se, but we're still viewing the video and trying to ascertain what new information that may yield," Bracknell said.

In the divorce petition, Shellie Zimmerman says she and her husband separated a month after Zimmerman was acquitted of any crime for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin last July.

Zimmerman's acquittal led to protests nationwide.
