Thread: Google Race Bias Check: Please confirm my findings

Please see if you can see what I think I'm seeing.

Go to Google

and type in the words 'white on black'

Google's predictive search software suggests several searches before you hit enter.

It suggests

"white on black iphone"
"white on black mac"
"white on black text"
"white on black crimes"


then, repeat the exercise but type in "Black on white" and what do you see?


When I do it, it goes BLANK with no suggested search phrases and no examples of what would be found showing beneath it.

I tried this fun little experiment for myself using other terms. And here is what I got for the following search phrases:

Searched:
black on black

Google autocomplete algorithm:
black on black tuxedo
black on black on black
black on black crime statistics
black on black violence


Searched:
black on brown

Google autocomplete algorithm:
black on brown
black on brown crime
black on brown fashion
black on brown myspace


Searched:
brown on black

Google autocomplete algorithm:
brown on black
brown on black hair
brown on black violence
brown on black crime


I got the same as you for "white on black". And surprisingly got nothing for "black on white". Now I say I'm surprised because according to Google, the algorithm works this way:

"How autocomplete works

As you type, Google's algorithm predicts and displays search queries based on other users' search activities. If you're signed in to your Google Account and have Web History enabled, you might also see search queries from relevant searches that you've done in the past..."

So you would think that based on that that it would mean no other user or not enough users in the U.S. have done a query that starts with "black on white". On the other hand, there is interest in those other queries I posted.

You could use your power on the internet to organize all your users to search for that phrase and see if it makes it into Google's database of commonly searched phrases that the algorithm accesses.

I typed in black on white and it worked for me... some samples:

I don't know if it makes any difference but I use Mozilla Firefox. But I did type the search into the Google search bar.

When I type in "black on white" I get absolutely no suggestions. I have Firefox so I checked the toolbar as well, and it does the same thing.

wow, this is about as interesting as when I discovered Facebook will would not allow new accounts created in the name "White Male" but would allow accounts dubbed "Black Male"

Bing gives me a pretty good selection - mostly black on white crime.

Got the same as you, W, on both Firefox and IE.
