Responding to comments made by North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber, South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott touted the broad diversity of the conservative movement. He said it it knows no racial boundaries, but instead focuses on the guiding principles of the past 238 years.

Last month, Barber called Sen. Scott, who is the first black Senator from the south since Reconstruction, a “ventriloquist’s dummy” for the Tea Party Movement. When a reporter asked Barber if he felt that he owed Sen. Scott an apology, Barber laughed at the question and stood by his comments.

Instead of slinging mud and stooping to personal attacks, Scott says that the NAACP and black community instead need to focus on the actual problems facing America, such as child poverty. He offers a positive alternative to Barber’s divisive comments.
