The Wall Street Journal editorial board, representing the more moderate wing of the Republican Party, is welcoming a brokered GOP convention in the summer, even though such an event would signal great divisions within the party.

Donald Trump's inability so far in the primary to pull away from the pack of three other candidates has led many to anticipate a convention in July where delegates will have to organize themselves and select a nominee.

Both John Kasich of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida are apparently banking on victories in their winner-take-all home states on Tuesday to justify remaining in the race. The Journal promoted the strategy in an editorial Monday.

"If they win their home states, Messrs. Rubio and Kasich have every right to fight on," said the Journal, which has called for GOP voters to resist Trump. "The goal of party primaries and conventions is to nominate the candidate with the best chance to win in November and then govern the country. If it takes an open convention, so be it."

The Journal also said Trump should be subjected to "three more months of far more intense media scrutiny."

The billionaire businessman is expected to perform well in Florida, where he is leading in some polls by 20 points. Polls, however, show he's roughly tied with Kasich in Ohio.
