GOP senator Susan Collins: Why I cannot support Trump

GOP senator Susan Collins: Why I cannot support Trump

By Susan Collins August 8 at 9:00 PM

The writer, a Republican, represents Maine in the Senate.

I will not be voting for Donald Trump for president. This is not a decision I make lightly, for I am a lifelong Republican. But Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country.

When the primary season started, it soon became apparent that, much like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Mr. Trump was connecting with many Americans who felt that their voices were not being heard in Washington and who were tired of political correctness. But rejecting the conventions of political correctness is different from showing complete disregard for common decency. Mr. Trump did not stop with shedding the stilted campaign dialogue that often frustrates voters. Instead, he opted for a constant stream of denigrating comments, including demeaning Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) heroic military service and repeatedly insulting Fox News host Megyn Kelly.

With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize. But it was his attacks directed at people who could not respond on an equal footing — either because they do not share his power or stature or because professional responsibility precluded them from engaging at such a level — that revealed Mr. Trump as unworthy of being our president.

My conclusion about Mr. Trump’s unsuitability for office is based on his disregard for the precept of treating others with respect, an idea that should transcend politics. Instead, he opts to mock the vulnerable and inflame prejudices by attacking ethnic and religious minorities. Three incidents in particular have led me to the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgment required to be president.

The first was his mocking of a reporter with disabilities, a shocking display that did not receive the scrutiny it deserved. I kept expecting Mr. Trump to apologize, at least privately, but he did not, instead denying that he had done what seemed undeniable to anyone who watched the video. At the time, I hoped that this was a terrible lapse, not a pattern of abuse.

The second was Mr. Trump’s repeated insistence that Gonzalo Curiel, a federal judge born and raised in Indiana, could not rule fairly in a case involving Trump University because of his Mexican heritage. For Mr. Trump to insist that Judge Curiel would be biased because of his ethnicity demonstrated a profound lack of respect not only for the judge but also for our constitutional separation of powers, the very foundation of our form of government. Again, I waited in vain for Mr. Trump to retract his words.

Third was Donald Trump’s criticism of the grieving parents of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq. It is inconceivable that anyone, much less a presidential candidate, would attack two Gold Star parents. Rather than honoring their sacrifice and recognizing their pain, Mr. Trump disparaged the religion of the family of an American hero. And once again, he proved incapable of apologizing, of saying he was wrong.

I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so. It is reckless for a presidential candidate to publicly raise doubts about honoring treaty commitments with our allies. Mr. Trump’s tendency to lash out when challenged further escalates the possibility of disputes spinning dangerously out of control.

I had hoped that we would see a “new” Donald Trump as a general-election candidate — one who would focus on jobs and the economy, tone down his rhetoric, develop more thoughtful policies and, yes, apologize for ill-tempered rants. But the unpleasant reality that I have had to accept is that there will be no “new” Donald Trump, just the same candidate who will slash and burn and trample anything and anyone he perceives as being in his way or an easy scapegoat. Regrettably, his essential character appears to be fixed, and he seems incapable of change or growth.

At the same time, I realize that Mr. Trump’s success reflects profound discontent in this country, particularly among those who feel left behind by an unbalanced economy and who wonder whether their children will have a better life than their parents. As we have seen with the dissatisfaction with both major- party nominees — neither of whom I support — these passions are real and the public will demand action.

Some will say that as a Republican I have an obligation to support my party’s nominee. I have thought long and hard about that, for being a Republican is part of what defines me as a person. I revere the history of my party, most particularly the value it has always placed on the worth and dignity of the individual, and I will continue to work across the country for Republican candidates. It is because of Mr. Trump’s inability and unwillingness to honor that legacy that I am unable to support his candidacy.

Wow, Susan. What a total disappointment you are! You sit on important crucial committees. Here are some of them:

    Committee appointments

United States Senate Committee on Appropriations
Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies
Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies
    Subcommittee on Defense
Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development
Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies
Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (Chair)
Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging
    Select Committee on Intelligence
    Special Committee on Aging (Chair)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Collins

    1. Donald Trump was not mocking the disability of the reporter. The reporter's disability was not the subject of the conversation. The reporter's "grovelling" to quote Trump is what he was mocking which WAS the subject of the conversation. For you to accuse someone of mocking a disability when they weren't, is a shameful act, Susan,, shameful. In fact for the Media to have even reported such a scam is shameful but you, you who serve on the subcommittee on "Intelligence", for you to be so easily scammed and misled, shows you are unfit to be a US Senator serving on the US Senate Subcommittees on Intelligence, Defense and many others. After all, you fund these activities, you authorize these activities, and you vote on Declarations of War and Authorizations to Go to War. Who can trust you when you can't even get a campaign mocking of a reporter who wouldn't own up to his own story and was grovelling on the subject and twist it into the despicable act of mocking the reporter's disability? No one can trust your judgment.

    2. Donald Trump never said the Judge "couldn't rule fairly", Donald Trump said he thought he was biased against Trump because he was of Mexican descent and Trump wanted to build the wall. Where have you been? Have you not listened to the hatred spewed at Trump by so many Mexican Americans because of their "heritage" over his desire to build a wall and stop illegal immigration??!! You are not knowledgeable of our issues in this country, you are not qualified to be in the US Senate.

    3. Donald Trump never "disparaged" the Khan family. He called their son an American hero, and he disagreed with Khan who viciously attacked Trump for financial reasons, Khan is an immigration lawyer upset with Trump's proposed ban on Muslim immigration because it would shut his Muslim immigration law business down. The Khan speech at the DNC wasn't about their son, it was about degrading Donald Trump over his ban trying to protect their livelihood admitting Muslims into the United States. Trump didn't understand why the wife didn't say anything and just stood there. Most mothers at his rallies who have lost a child speak at the rallies and say something about the issue that took their life. So he thought maybe she wasn't allowed to speak and asked the question. That is not "disparaging" their religion. That is asking a question not criticizing or disparaging someone. You obviously didn't hear or watch the actual interview and are stupidly relying upon the sound bytes taken out of context with major omissions and then mis-characterized by the Corrupt Media. Someone so easily fooled is a stupid person, Susan. You are a stupid person. We can't afford to have stupid people in the US Senate. You need an opponent at the end of your term because you've just illustrated 3 examples of not doing your homework before you made a rash and erroneous decision.

Oh, and one other thing. Trump is going to win this election. He'll be the 45th President of the United States. And after your letter, you know what that means? That's right. He'll be on the Inside, and you'll be on the Outside.

Trump doesn't like stupid people who don't do their homework.

Shame on you Susan Collins, shame, shame, shame on you.

Why is it that someone as accomplished as Susan Collins cannot state the facts about her decision not to support Trump and has to be bashed in such an unflattering and opinionated way.

There are facts in Sen. Collins reasons and nothing more than opinions in the post. In fact, the last two subjects were primary reasons Trump's campaign derailed itself.

It is too bad you can not "dislike" a post by pressing a button. You have to take time and respond as I did here.

Trump created enough controversy for this to happen and now he must own it or change for the better.

People want their votes to be earned and not just given because it is their party. When you are as controversial as Trump this is going to happen and there is no need to discredit people just because they are not supporting him. He could learn a lot here that could benefit this country.

guess she likes the long list of dangers hillary has caused along with her multitude of lies better...
she should have listed them side by side and on to several pages for hillary's list of negatives.

these uptight negative republicans will put hillary in the wh, guess that is what they want.

Yes, artist, it is what they want. They want Hillary to win. They are as much responsible for the mess we're in as any Democrat. They play a vote here or there to try to look like Republicans, but in their guts, they aren't really Republicans, not on important national issues like trade, immigration, national security, spending, budget, employment, poverty, even race relations. They've never stood up for a black American, yet rush against a temporary ban on Muslims which Trump proposes simply to prevent the continued entry of Radical Islamic Terrorists into the United States.

They're a strange lot. It makes big press, but who they vote for or don't vote for won't make any difference on election day. Americans will make up their own minds on this one. It's a shame to see it, it's hard to watch it, it's an unprecedented weirdness being revealed to exist in our party, but we've all kind of known we had traitors in our party, this just exposes them and removes all doubt.

Rated 25% by USBC, indicating an open-border stance.

Perhaps, in addition to her listed comments, she has a hidden reason for not supporting Trump. Just a thought.

Joe's right though, not everyone that supports Trump should be made out a hero for doing so and not everyone that does not support him should be made out to be the enemy. For me it all comes down to their reasoning for supporting or not supporting. For example, one of Cruz's primary reasons for not supporting Trump was because he purposely attacked his family in retribution for something Cruz had nothing to do with. He actually implied Cruz's wife was ugly and accused his father of being an assassin. To most folks those things would be considered childish and hateful. However, I do think Cruz should have endorsed Trump, but I do understand his reasoning for not doing so and have no idea what I would have done in the same position.

On the opposite side of the coin, folks like David Duke and Vaidimir Putin shouldn't be glorified simply for supporting Trump. Putin is corrupt to the core and Duke is a known racist. Of course Trump can't help who supports him and I would never judge him based on who supports him.

While I'm not an enamored Trump loyalist and will not defend him when I feel he's in the wrong, I will most certainly vote on him because immigration, border security, and trade are #1, #2, and #3 on my priority list. None of the opposition offers an opportunity to fix the problems we have in these areas. Oh, and future U.S. Supreme Court appointees are also a huge concern of mine.

So, to sum it up, some people have good reason to support Trump and some feel the have good reason not to support him. However, not everyone deserves to be vilified or glorified for their choice ...... depends on their reason.

Sorry for the rambling. Probably didn't even do a good job of making my point.

    Susan Collins gave 3 reasons:

    1. A false fabricated story about Trump mocking the disability of a reporter. This is totally false. Everyone who knows Trump or anything about him knows he wasn't mocking the disability of the reporter, he was mocking the reporter's grovelling about his article he had written. Susan Collins is on the Intelligence Committee. Susan Collins voted to authorize the War in Iraq based on phony intelligence. This intelligence wasn't "wrong", it was fabricated. Just like the Corrupt Media story about Trump and the disabled reporter. She's proven she's not fit to be in the US Senate falling for the latest CIA scam to start a war, she's proven she's not qualified to be on the Intelligence Committee as well.

    2. A fabricated story about Trump saying the Judge in his Trump U case couldn't be fair because of his heritage. Trump never said that, Trump said the Judge was biased, Trump has every right to claim that, and when asked why the Judge would be biased, Trump said it may be because he's Mexican, Mexican heritage, and Trump wants to build the wall. That is what Trump said. Trump NEVER SAID the Judge could not be fair because of his heritage. Trump said he wasn't fair because of it. Of course the Judge could be fair but in Trump's opinion, he wasn't or he would have dismissed the case, and searching for a source of the bias, Trump correctly arrived at the heritage issue. This is no different than what many claim every day that because you're of Mexican heritage, Latino descent, etc., etc., etc., you will vote Democrat because you don't like our immigration laws. I don't believe Most Hispanic, Mexican or Latino Americans don't like our immigration laws, but there is SOME REASON they vote Democrat and belong to all these organizations fighting US immigration law. Most of the leaders of amnesty, leaders of sanctuary cities, leaders of legalization, path to citizenship, all these organizations are led by Latinos, Hispanics and most of them if you look closely are of Mexican "heritage". So of course, it's reasonable to conclude that the Mexican American Judge who is part of La Raza Lawyers of San Diego, and was supported by the law firm that represents the defendants in this case. Susan Collins didn't do her homework or she chose to ignore the facts and repeat Corrupt Media Falsehoods in her Op-Ed Article.

    3. A fabricated story about Trump attacking the Khans. The Khans attacked Trump. Trump responded and did so quite appropriately if you listen to the whole interview. Susan Collins didn't bother to listen to the whole interview or she would know that Trump didn't criticize a "gold star family", he called their son a hero, but he responded to the father's vicious attack on Trump about his Muslim ban by stating that his ban isn't about the War in Iraq or the son's service, it's about keeping Radical Islamic Terrorism out of the United States.

Those are the reasons she gave. Nothing to do with policy. Nothing to do with facts. Nothing to do with reality. That makes her the crazy, incompetent person she's proved herself to be with this Op-Ed Article. Who cares who she votes for? I certainly don't. She's free to vote for whoever she wants. But she chose to write an article to defame Trump, not on policies, on falsehoods created by the Corrupt Media, which is something I'll vilify every day of the week and twice on Sunday no matter who does it.

Oh by the way for those who don't know, Susan Collins is Pro-Choice, the one position she holds that I support. So is Senator Mark Kirk from Illinois. But based on their statements, this has nothing to do with why they're opposing Trump, they're opposing Trump on his "tone", Kirk says it's because of Trump's statement about the Judge. does anyone really believe that? Either they don't do their homework or there's something else going on.
