GOP shouldn’t bend on immigration

The Republican Party, which for decades has supported high levels of immigration and amnesties for illegal aliens, now finds itself unable to connect with the very same people for whom they held the door open.

That’s pretty funny, I think.

Mitt Romney lost the election not because Hispanics resented what the media claims is “harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric” but because immigrants traditionally vote for Democrats because they believe that Americans should be coddled from cradle to grave. A Pew Hispanic Center study last spring revealed that Hispanics like big government, i.e., the bigger our “safety net,” the better.

The unemployment rate among Hispanic-Americans is 10 percent, and one would hope that they’re not too fond of having to compete with illegal aliens in a dismal job market. What would have happened if Romney had stuck to his guns about cracking down on illegal immigration and repeatedly emphasized that it hurts all Americans regardless of race or ethnicity? Why didn’t he challenge President Barack Obama during one of their debates to defend his throwing of America’s unemployed under the bus while promising a “better life” to illegal aliens? Any possibility that Hispanic-Americans would have responded more favorably on Nov. 6?

Here’s something else that’s also pretty funny if not downright stupid: Believing that another amnesty, which would be the seventh amnesty since President Ronald Reagan’s 1986 amnesty for 3 million illegal aliens, will create more Hispanic Republicans. If that were true, how come Hispanics didn’t flock in large numbers to the Republican Party years ago to show their appreciation for and undying loyalty to the GOP?

Republicans are not the biggest losers out there right now. That distinction belongs to the 20 million American citizens who can’t find full time work while the government allows 7 million illegal aliens to keep their non-farming payroll jobs and every year issues one million work permits to new legal immigrants.

Romney was an inept campaigner and he was up against someone whose one real talent is campaigning. Think it's a good idea to talk about your friends who own NASCAR teams? Surely thou jesteth. It's the economy, stupid. Hit it. Over and over. 'Bama is giving benefits to illegals, because no one is challenging him. Need a campaign theme for mid-America? Try All unemployed Americans being undercut by immigrants.


Romney may very well have made a better president, but he'll never get to be president until he develops an ability to focus on vulnerabilities of his opponent.
