Reid Kills E-Verify Amendment to Unemployment Bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) used a procedural move to kill an amendment offered by Sen. Jeff Sessions that would have required unemployment compensation recipients to be verified through E-Verify.

The House overwhelmingly passed (331-to-83) H.R.3548 back in September that would extend unemployment benefits for 14 additional weeks. When the bill came to the Senate floor for debate, Sen. Sessions filed an amendment on Oct. 20 that would require all unemployment compensation recipients to be verified through E-Verify. The amendment also offered a permanent extension for E-Verify and expanded the Administration's executive order requiring federal contractors to use E-Verify for new hires. The Sessions' amendment would extend the executive order to also require federal contractors to verify existing employees working on the federal contract and removed the $100,000 contract minimum.

On Oct. 27, the Senate passed cloture, cutting off further amendments and setting a timeline for the bill. Sen. Reid then recommitted the bill to the Finance Committee where it was quickly released. The move burned time off the clock established by the cloture vote, essentially not leaving enough time for debate on Sessions' amendment. A second cloture vote after the bill came out of the Finance Committee passed, 85-to-2, without the Sessions' amendment.

The bill is still pending, but Sessions no longer has time for a debate and vote on his amendment.

I called and they said the reason why they did this is because the House said they would not pass the bill if the E-Verify amendment was on the bill.

I know we need to CLEAN HOUSE literally of all of the Open Border lovers in Congress - but we need to make their offices very aware that we are NOT backing down on E-Verify!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

The House wouldn't even accept Session's e-verify emendment. That's like saying no amendments can be added to any bill because the voting body will then not consider it.

They have no problem tacking on wasteful pork projects to any bill they want to but when it comes to verifying legal status for persons to receive more taxpayer money they just sever any specifications as to eligibility.

I know it must have been a reasonable one because Sessions is a fine senator. Then they could have voted anyway.

Cloture is a lethal weapon in the hands of Congress.

Harry Reid is a disgusting excuse for an American. He should be sent to No Man's Land where he belongs.

Immigration

Estimates run as high as 13 million illegal immigrants in this country which makes it a very serious problem. We all respect and appreciate that the United States is a country of immigrants. The best way to honor those who come here legally is to enforce our immigration laws even if that means a physical barrier or electronic fence at our border. There are many immigrants who are trying to come here illegally because they want to work so they can help their families abroad. To them I say that we will do our best to talk to your country’s leaders about improving economic conditions in your homeland but you must respect and obey our immigration laws. If you want to live the American Dream please visit one of our embassies and apply for a work visa just as millions of fine, lawful immigrants and naturalized Americans have done for decades.

can't wait until I don't have to see this fool on the floor of the senate any longer, I am so tired of their tricks, someone needs to remind him the American way is debate then a vote, these things are not decided by one fool.

The harm Reid is doing to American taxpayers/voters will come back to bite him big time. Obamacare will not pass and neither will amnesty. Dems who vote for either one will lose their cushy seats in 2010. Look to VA and NJ.
