Gov. Jindal Offers GOP Replacement for Obamacare

Posted 9 hours ago by Dave Jolly

Republicans have promised a plan to replace Obamacare for the past several years, but no one has yet offered up a workable plan. Democrats have been hounding Republicans to put their money where their mouth is, rightly so.

Finally, one brave Republican, who may have aspirations on a 2016 run for the White House, has stepped up the plate with an alternative plan to replace Obamacare with. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling his replacement plan: The Freedom and Empowerment Plan: the Prescription for Conservative Consumer-Focused Health Reform.

In Jindal’s plan, pre-existing conditions would be covered and it would increase the options for healthcare plans for the American people. He says that it would also lower the cost to consumers, something that Obamacare failed to do for most Americans. His plan would also provide everyone the same standard deduction for health insurance irrespective of them obtaining their insurance plans through an employer or on their own, thus eliminating the inequalities that currently exist in the tax code.

Jindal’s plan would also provide a $100 billion fund over 10 years for states to use to help with lower income families. An executive summary explains:

“States could use these funds to subsidize insurance coverage for low-income individuals who would not receive tax savings from a health insurance deduction, and individuals with pre-existing conditions.”

Prior to his announcement of his replacement for Obamacare, there has been talk about the possibility of Jindal running for president in 2016. At a breakfast meeting where he revealed his Obamacare replacement plan, reporters asked Jindal about his 2016 plans and he responded:
“In terms of 2016, look, it’s no secret that I’ve said it’s something I’m thinking about. But right now, I’m focused on winning the war of ideas.” He also said that Republicans should nominate a governor to run for president because they have more experience of running things that congressmen don’t have. Offering up a plan to replace Obamacare could be just what he needs to jump him to becoming the GOP pack leader in the bid for the Oval Office. Some are already saying that this shows that Jindal is a man of action and not just words.

If other Republicans pick up on Jindal’s Obamacare replacement plan, it just might help some of them win this year’s mid-term elections and win the Senate from the Democrats.
