BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice has scheduled a rally for toÂ*night in opposition to AlaÂ*bama's new immigration law. The law originally was set to take effect today, but a federal judge temporarily halted its enforcement while she considered a case that seeks to overturn the law.

The Rally for AlaÂ*bama's Future: Repeal HB56 will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Linn Park in downÂ*town Birmingham. The rally will be hosted by Sharrif SimÂ*mons, and speakers will inÂ*clude Birmingham Mayor William Bell, as well as other elected officials and civil right leaders.

The law would make it a crime for an immiÂ*grant to be in Alabama withÂ*out documentation of his or her legal presence and for a citizen to employ or harbor an illegal immigrant, among other provisions.

Critics of Ala. immigration law plan protest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Opponents of Alabama's tough new law on illegal immigration are holding a rally in Birmingham.

The demonstration set for Thursday afternoon was originally timed to coincide with the law taking effect. But a federal judge this week delayed implementation, saying she needs more time to consider lawsuits filed by critics who contend the law is unconstitutional.

Speakers at the demonstration include Birmingham Mayor William Bell, religious leaders and representatives of Hispanic- and immigrant-rights groups.

Republican supporters say the new law is needed to crack down on illegal immigrants receiving government benefits and filling jobs that could be held by legal Alabama residents.

Opponents including the Obama administration argue the law oversteps state bounds and will place to great a burden on local officials who have to enforce it.

"Immigrant Justice"? They can't even be truthful in the name they picked for their organization. This has nothing to do with "immigrants". It is about defending illegal alien lawbreakers. I hate the dishonesty on the pro illegal side in the spin terminology they use. Of course that is just one of their many lies.

These people seem to feel empowered when they are in a big group marching and demanding a free ride on the back of the people of the State of Alabama.
We have illegals of all races in Alabama, why do the Hispanic ones think they are more entitled or special.

Demonstrators voice loud opposition to new immigration law

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - A group of demonstrators loudly voiced their disapproval of Alabama's new immigration law during a Thursday rally at Linn Park.

People traveled from as far as Arizona to participate in the September first rally, which was originally supposed to be the day the new law took effect. A judge has placed a temporary injunction on the law which has been challenged as unconstitutional.

Regardless of how the judge rules on the case, the decision is expected to be appealed.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A crowd has gathered in Linn Park this evening to protest Alabama's new immigration law, filling the lawn in front of Birmingham City Hall and surrounding the park's fountain.

Speakers at times evoked the memory of Birmingham's civil rights movement as they called for a repeal of the law that was set to take effect today. A federal judge temporarily halted its enforcement while she considered a case that seeks to overturn the law.

"America and the world are watching," said Isabel Rubio, executive director of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, paraphrasing a warning issued in the 1960s when civil rights workers in the city were often violently attacked.

"Will Alabama return to a past we've tried so hard to overcome?" Rubio asked the crowd.

Those in attendance -- many of them families with children -- fanned themselves and held signs demanding a repeal of the law.

Romelia Jaimes, a native of Mexico who lives in Ensley, was surrounded by her three daughters, ages 4, 12, and 17, as she held a sign that read, "We are all human beings. We all deserve human rights."

Jaimes said they were there to support families that could be separated by the law.

"We're not taking anyone's jobs. We only want to work in peace," Jaimes said.

The sign should have said " Don't throw me and my anchors off of my free ride on welfare"

She needs to seek human rights in her country of Mexico, US citizens don't owe her a living for having kids. JMO

Illegals already have basic human rights so what is she talking about? They don't have the right to not be prosecuted for illegal entry into our country and then deported.
