North Carolina ranks 11th in the nation in the number of organizations classified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center with 31, according to a report by the center.
In the Triangle, active groups listed by the report are the Ku Klux Klan, Nation of Islam (black separatist), The Daily Stormer (neo-Nazi) and Americans for Legal Immigration (anti-immigrant).
The report shows an anti-Muslim group in Fayetteville (ACT for America), a white nationalist group in Benson (Traditionalist Youth Network), and racist skinhead groups in North Carolina. It also includes Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, south of Hickory, as an anti-LGBT group.
The Charlotte area also has a presence of black separatists and neo-Nazis.
The report says Virginia has 42 hate groups, the fifth most in the country. White supremacists were at the center of protests Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., that prompted counterprotests and led to violence. One person was killed and 19 were injured when a man drove a vehicle into a crowd.
The most prevalent of the active hate groups in the nation last year were black separatists (193 groups) and Ku Klux Klan groups (130), the center reported.
The number of hate groups in each state generally correlates with its population.
California leads the list with 79, followed by Florida (63), Texas (55), New York (47), Virginia (42), Pennsylvania (40), Tennessee (38), Ohio (35), Illinois (32) and Georgia (32).
Hate groups in the United States grew in number from 457 in 1999 to a peak at 1,018 in 2011, the report said. The number dropped over the next three years, to 784, but as of last year had risen back to 917.
