Imagine An American President That Served America’s Interests

    Why Trump's speech hit home.

Have you ever watched the television and thought to yourself, why are we protecting that country while its citizens spit at our troops? Have you ever read a news story about an aid worker butchered somewhere and wondered, why are we still trying to help those people? Have you ever gotten angry by watching pompous European elected officials speak down to Americans?
If you answered “YES” to any of those questions, Trump’s speech last night hit home.

The United States spends billions of dollars on the protection of the world and we get ridiculed. Our troops are protested. Our citizens are attacked. Our way of life is mocked. Our “free” trade deals come at a one-sided cost… to American workers who cannot afford them.

Yet, our politicians seem to continue to bumble along … until Trump.

The American taxpayer still pays more than one-fifth of the United Nations’ budget, yet that institution constantly denigrates us. We represent 75 percent of the NATO budget, and yet France and Turkey deny us overflight rights for military action. The United States gives $1.5 billion in aid to Pakistan annually … a country within which only 28 percent of the population dislikes ISIS.

    Why?

What have the American people gotten for their money? Murdered citizens? Dead soldiers? Mocking condescension? Why should we, the American people, continue to send our hard-earned tax dollars to nation-states and institutions that loathe us?

    We shouldn’t.

This week, a recent interview with Donald Trump was revealed in The New York Times. In that interview Trump effectively said, “If you have been a good ally to us, we will be a good ally to you.” For some reason, that was shocking. The mainstream media and so-called foreign policy experts decried his announcement. Some said it was a reversal from Reagan policy.

I say it was about time.

Since when did consideration for the needs of the American people become a bad thing? It is not. The fact of the matter is that tens of thousands of U.S. troops have died for the sake of honoring our NATO and other international treaty agreements since 1945; a few thousand of other countries’ soldiers – at the most – have died supporting us.

Where is the justice for the middle class family with a son or daughter in uniform? Where is the justice for the working class family that produces enlisted personnel? When will we stop being the world’s police officers?

Of course, Thursday night’s speech went an extra step. In typical Trump fashion, the Republican nominee rightfully called out the one-sided trade deals that hurt the American worker. Again, the shock of the media class was astounding. One pundit on MSNBC this morning asked incredulously, “How can he turn his back on the world?”

My answer: Because the world turned its back on us.

It is time for an American president to turn his attention toward us.
