WASHINGTON D.C. - The son of immigrants, Rob Sobhani, Ph. D., was raised with a deep love of America and an appreciation of its legacy of open doors. Today Dr. Sobhani fears the fallout from an immigration policy that is completely out of control. Unmanaged immigration , legal and illegal, are having a disastrous effect on state and local economies, jeopardizing jobs for low-income citizens, creating a rapid population increase that puts pressure on our shaky infrastructure and overburdened environment and worst of all… are fracturing our national identity and spirit. What is needed, he argues, is a new immigration consensus—one that would respect the tradition of American opportunity and diversity without crippling our nation. He explores this in his new book Press 2 for English: Fix Immigration, Save America (Jan. 2012).

Dr. Sobhani makes a convincing case that a failure of national leadership has paralyzed any progress in immigration reform. The economics of managing immigration are clear: if we fix the system, we can create jobs for millions of Americans here and provide hope to millions who want to return to their native lands and help rebuild them.

In this fast-paced book, Dr. Sobhani outlines a five-point plan to fix the U.S. immigration system, while strengthening the assimilation and loyalty of those who come to America legally. His plan includes a commitment to establishing English as the official language, an action that would strengthen our singular bond. Second, he argues that before the states and Congress devise new laws and procedures to address illegal immigration, we should get serious about enforcing the laws already on the books—and he offers some compelling methods for doing that.

The third part of Dr. Sobhani’s plan calls for a five-year immigration moratorium when most immigration would be put on hold. This would provide an opportunity to re-evaluate the entire system, while easing the pressures immigrants are placing on our struggling economy. Fourth, in conjunction with a moratorium, he calls for a re-evaluation of family reunification policies through which millions of people are added to the rolls every decade, regardless of their ability to contribute to the prosperity of the nation.

Dr. Sobhani’s fifth point is most provocative—that immigration is most attractive to citizens of economically weak and politically corrupt nations. America should work to promote economic sustainability and political progress in neighboring nations, giving potential immigrants motivation to stay and work within their own systems.

Press 2 For English is a sensible call to action for those who are committed to facing our nation’s problems with compassion and resolve.

A Rallying Plan of Immigration Action
There is a consensus building in America about how to formulate a compassionate and bipartisan immigration policy. Among groups he surveyed, Dr. Sobhani has found a remarkable level of agreement on the following :

    • Make English the official common language

    • Decouple U.S. trade from China and create wealth south of our border

    • Create jobs by issuing tourist and investor visas

    • Enforce the immigration laws currently on our books

    • Zero tolerance for companies that hire illegal aliens

    • Jobs and services should be given preferentially to existing U.S. citizens

    • Reduce quotas on legal immigrants until our unemployment crisis has ended

    • Family members eligible to immigrate on the basis of “chain migration” policies should be limited to nuclear families, not entire extended families

    • The DREAM Act should pass with a caveat that it be decoupled from family reunification

    • America should promote good governance and democracy south of our border to strengthen those societies and reduce the need to emigrate

We didn't always have to press one for English 2 for Spanish. All other immigrants had the respect to learn the language of the Country they decided to live in.

I had to call the Department of Veterans Affairs today, and I heard those famous words. Of course I complained about it. I am getting tired of hearing my own mouth complaining about this nonsense.
