    Hologram brings mixed feelings

    RALEIGH — Perhaps nothing since the inclusion of the Wright Brothers’ flyer and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the North Carolina driver’s license has brought as much attention to that piece of plastic as a little silver hologram that the Division of Motor Vehicles began placing on the back of the license almost a year ago.

    The hologram, which depicts a map of North America, complete with longitude and latitude lines, has been included on licenses issued in North Carolina since December 2006, the DMV says.

    While the leader of a group fighting illegal immigration sees the hologram as a part of the transformation of the North Carolina driver’s license into an Orwellian tool, a DMV spokeswoman said that it is there merely as a security and anti-fraud measure.

    But the information isn’t used to track the movement of residents, she said.

    It is used, however, in conjunction with law enforcement investigations, Howell said. One example would be of a picture captured by a security bank camera during a robbery.
    This is not true.

    The biometric facial recognition technology is being used to determine your ID anytime you walk past a camera connected to the Federal system and they have it up in most of the airports and train stations already and on some city streets.

    So if you have one of these then the best thing to do is to lose it. That's what I would do. I would take the chance of getting pulled over without one.
