CORONA DEL MAR, Bill Cool: The Register devoted numerous pages to maritime immigration smuggling operations and told stories of some people who used the ocean route instead of sneaking into the U.S. by land [“New Route exacts price,” Front Page, Sept. 16].

What was not mentioned in any of these stories were the hardships that their illegal entry has caused the people in our country. First, they have taken about seven million jobs from legal residents who desperately need the work. To get that work, many illegal immigrants have stolen someone’s identity.

Because they usually work for lower wages they have, in turn, lowered the incomes of American laborers who must often compete with them.

California and other states are facing bankruptcy due to inept politicians and illegal immigrants. Yet, some estimates say that the illegal immigrant population may cost our state more than $21.7 billion a year.

There are many more damaging effects to Americans such as hospitals closings because of unpaid bills by illegal immigrants or the deterioration of the educational system.

Then there is the cost of $50,000 per person a year to incarcerate those imprisoned in California with a total approaching one billion dollars.

Yes, millions want to immigrate to the U.S., and we should continue to welcome them, but when they come into the country illegally, they tend to create far more problems than benefits for Americans.
