Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson helps launch website to crowdfund U.S.-Mexico border wall

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson is helping to launch a new website aimed at crowdfunding a Mexican border wall.

The New Bedford Standard-Times, on its website South Coast Today , reported that Hodgson was part of a group of sheriffs who met with Vice President Mike Pence and White House officials on Wednesday to talk about illegal immigration and border security.

Hodgson then announced a crowdfunding website to "build the wall" at a Capitol Hill press conference with 44 sheriffs from 35 states.

    The website
was created by the National Sheriffs' Association, a trade association for sheriffs.

The site urges Congress to pass legislation to secure the borders, enforce immigration laws, build a wall and upgrade technology along the U.S.-Mexico border, end local efforts to shelter immigrants without legal status, and have "zero tolerance" for "criminal aliens."

"The failure of Congress to create legitimate and comprehensive immigration reform for more than 20 years has dramatically undermined our ability to keep our communities safe," the website states. "Your donation helps us provide the resources necessary to help local law enforcement along the border take their communities' safety into their own hands."

It sends donors to a page for an "immigration reform support fund" on the National Sheriffs' Association website.

Hodgson, a Republican, has been a strong advocate for increased border security, including the building of Trump's wall. Hodgson told a New Bedford news station in April that he wanted to start a site to crowdfund the building of a border wall.

President Donald Trump made building a wall along the southern border a key campaign promise. Although he promised to make Mexico pay for the wall, he has since asked for funding from Congress, which has not given him the money he wants.

In March, Hodgson spearheaded a letter to Congress signed by 310 sheriffs, including Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph McDonald, asking for congressional action to improve border security.

    They tried this in Arizona.

In 3 years they raised enough money to build 10th of a mile of fence.

Arizona bid to build 1 mile of border fence appears dead; sheriffs may receive money

"About $2.8 million is needed to build a mile of fencing, but only about 10 percent of that has been raised. Lawmakers at first wanted to build 200 miles of fencing."

Bristol County Sheriff presents President Trump with plaque

by DARTMOUTH, Mass (WJAR) Saturday, September 8th 2018

Bristol County Sheriff Hodgson helps raise money towards building US-Mexico border wall. (WJAR)

MICHELLE SAN MIGUEL, NBC 10 NEWS — Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson presented President Donald Trump with a plaque at the White House this week and thanked the president for his support of law enforcement.

“It was important for me and the other sheriffs to be at the White House to be able to let the president know that we were completely, 150 percent behind what he had done in giving us our footing back but also his efforts to get the wall built on the border,” Hodgson said.

During his visit to the White House Wednesday, Hodgson and dozens of other sheriffs from across the country also met with White House officials, including the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

Hodgson said, “my conversations really had to do with new initiatives, ideas around perhaps maybe some incentive to have the registry of motor vehicles personnel be trained about how to identify impostors because we have thousands of them coming in trying to get U.S. ID's.”

Hodgson has visited the southern border three times and has been vocal about his support for building a wall. Those who oppose the wall question the steep cost and how much it will curb illegal immigration.

“You can go up and down and talk to the ranchers, the cattle ranchers and anybody along the border- they'll tell you, they're floating in everywhere and they're coming in with unfettered access and we can't have that,” Hodgson said.

While at the White House, Hodgson also told the President about a crowdfunding page organized by the National Sheriffs Association where the donations will go to help fund and construct a border wall.
