Sen. Coburn Blasts Trump Camp Over Fabricated Anti-Cruz Tweet

Sen. Coburn Blasts Trump Camp Over Fabricated Anti-Cruz Tweet

Camp Trumphoid is being blasted by a former senator for using a fake quote in an anti-Ted Cruz tweet.

Dan Scavino, of the Trump campaign, claimed that former Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) trashed Ted Cruz as “without a doubt, one of the most dishonest people in DC.” That would’ve been major bad news for Cruz if Sen. Coburn had actually said that. But he didn’t.

In first grade and outside the Trump fiefdom, that’s called a “lie.” The Donald ought to be familiar with the concept. Tongue-lashing others with it seems to be Trump’s favorite indoor sport. He’s certainly been working overtime to pin the label on the conservative firebrand from Texas.

We now know that Camp Trumphoid faked the Coburn “quote.” It took a line from an article by a liberal blogger and presented it in a tweet as a “quote” from Senator Tom Coburn:

Unreal! Highly respected Senator Tom Coburn- said this about Cruz: https://t.co/2WswDhyPQD
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 16, 2016

    Speaking of first grade…

The quote actually came from liberal blogger Allen Clifton. The guy bloviates at ForwardProgressives. He’s made no secret of his hatred and distaste for Ted Cruz. The line that Scavino and Trump both passed off as a “quote” by Sen. Coburn actually came from a story Clifton wrote last October. It’s titled, Former GOP Senator Blasts Pathological Liar Ted Cruz for Constantly Misleading Americans.

The line Trump and company picked up and linked to is from Clifton’s piece. It goes like this:

I’ve made no secret of my total disdain for Sen. Ted Cruz. He epitomizes everything that’s wrong with the Republican party. He is, without a doubt, one of the most dishonest people in Washington and, in my opinion, a complete sociopath.

Former Republican Sen. Tom Coburn critiques ‘Cruz effect’ on Congress

WASHINGTON–Former Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., on Thursday night accused Sen. Ted Cruz of stymieing Congress with divisive rhetoric and irresponsible promises.

Coburn, who retired in 2014, railed against Cruz and his allies’ insistence on tying conservative goals to must-pass government funding legislation, risking a shutdown. He called it “the Cruz effect” in an interview with Sirius XM host Pete Dominick.

“When you tell people you can accomplish something that you can’t, for example, shutting down the government over the Affordable Care Act,” said Coburn, “you create greater disappointment in the hinterlands, because you gave them a false hope, knowing that you couldn’t accomplish it, but it was about yelling, and screaming, and waving the flag.”

Cruz often says Republican leadership breaks campaign promises, refuses to fight without easy support, abandons voters and pushes forward a liberal agenda to appease lobbyists and corporate interests.

“If only all the people who might be murdered by a nuclear weapon could create a PAC in Washington and hire some lobbyists, maybe leadership would listen to them then,” said Cruz in a blistering Senate floor speech last month. “But the truck driver at home, the waitress at home, the school teacher at home, the pastor, the police officer, the working men and women, the Washington cartel doesn’t listen to them.”

Coburn, known for his own aggressive measures to curb spending, said Cruz’s claims undermine Congress and don’t reflect the realities of legislative progress.

“I came out of the Senate with one of the most conservative ratings ever in the history of the Senate. You know, it was like 98.8% in terms of conservative,” said Coburn. “And yet, I compromised all the time to accomplish things that were good for the country.”

Coburn’s charge comes three months after he testified at a congressional hearing on medical research chaired by Cruz. There, the ex-senator and physician criticized Congress for creating a risk-averse culture at the Food and Drug Administration.

“You beat the crap out of them when they do something wrong,” said Coburn. “What will you all do in legislation to get the monkey off of the FDA’s back?”

Okay, that still doesn't do anything to address Trump's outright lie. The moral of the story, one who lives in a glass house shouldn't throw stones. Just saying ......
