Huge database of 191 million voters leaked

A computer security researcher found it while trying to raise awareness of data leaks

A database of 191 million voters has been leaked on the Internet.

A computer security researcher found the database after finding out it had been incorrectly configured, according to a Reuters report.

The leak exposes a huge volume of names, addresses, birthdays, and phone numbers, among other information, in all of the state and the District of Columbia.

The discovery was made by Chris Vickery, who works as a tech support specialist in Texas. He said in the report that he is trying to raise awareness of these
massive leaks that the public may not be aware of.

Voter data is actually technically public information, but such a massive database of American voters, including their personal information and party affiliation,
could be targeted by criminals.

Vickery doesn’t know who compiled the database or has ownership. He contacted federal officials about it.

The find was first reported by CSO Online and Databreaches.net, according to the report. Vickery said the sites helped him in his efforts to track down the
owner of the database. CSO Online speculated that software provider NationBuiler may have been the owner as it noticed data codes similar to ones the
firm uses, but NationBuilder denied, while acknowledging that some of the information could have come from it as it often supplies data to political campaigns,
according to the report
